A three-year-old Scottish boy has died after getting into difficulty in a hotel pool while on holiday in Turkey. Callum Salmond passed away in hospital on Tuesday, five days after the incident at the Voyage Belek five-star resort on the Turkish Riviera.
According to police, a female British doctor initially thought Callum was playing in the water but soon realised he was drowning. She pulled him out and administered CPR before an ambulance rushed him to hospital, where he was placed on a life support machine.
Callum’s mother, Donna Ness, a 31-year-old marketing manager, had been attending to her nine-month-old son Max, who had a rash, when Callum got into trouble. His father, Graeme Salmond, a 32-year-old garage service manager, was also present. The family, from Kirkcaldy, Fife, described Callum as a “happy little soul” who attended nursery at Strathallan Primary School.
A police officer who took statements from the parents said an autopsy will now be conducted. In a statement, the family said: “We are all absolutely devastated by Callum’s death. This is every parent’s worst nightmare and words cannot truly express our feelings. Callum was a wonderful son, grandson and big brother and we are completely heartbroken.”
