A 15-year-old girl from Oklahoma has been left brain dead after participating in a dangerous TikTok trend known as the 'Benadryl challenge'. Leah Presson, who aspired to become famous on the platform, ingested a large quantity of the allergy medication in an attempt to achieve a high. The challenge involves recording oneself consuming excessive doses of Benadryl and trying to stay awake.
Leah suffered a seizure and subsequently went into cardiac arrest. She is now in intensive care with no brain activity, and her family is preparing to donate her organs. Her father, Richard Presson, expressed his devastation, stating that Leah always wanted to be famous on TikTok. He emphasized the tragedy of losing his daughter to a preventable challenge.
Medical Warnings
Dr. Ryan Brown explained the severe risks associated with the challenge. He noted that taking Benadryl in excess can lead to seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest, which can result in brain death due to lack of blood flow to the brain. He urged parents to be vigilant and look for signs of unusual behavior or empty pill bottles.
Family's Decision
Despite the grim prognosis, Richard Presson initially hoped for a miracle but ultimately decided to donate Leah's organs, as she was a generous person who would have wanted to help others. He mentioned that Leah loved the show Grey's Anatomy and that her organs could potentially save up to 90 lives. The family is preparing for an honor walk to celebrate her donation.
Preventive Advice
Dr. Brown reiterated that Benadryl is safe when used correctly for allergies or colds, but overdosing can be fatal. He advised parents to educate their children about the dangers of such challenges and to monitor their behavior closely.
