The family of Captain Sir Tom Moore, the beloved NHS fundraising hero, have been forced to demolish an unauthorised spa pool at their Bedfordshire home after losing a bitter planning battle.
The 84-year-old veteran, who raised over £38 million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden during the first COVID-19 lockdown, passed away in February 2021. His daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore had applied for permission to build a small charity office in the grounds of their Marston Moretaine home, but instead constructed a larger building containing a spa pool.
Planning Permission Controversy
Central Bedfordshire Council ordered the demolition of the unauthorised structure after ruling it was 'at odds' with the original planning application. The building, which included changing rooms, toilets and the spa pool, was significantly larger than the approved plans for a simple L-shaped office.
Neighbours had complained the new building dominated the garden and overlooked their properties. The council issued an enforcement notice in July 2023 giving the family three months to remove the structure.
Demolition Work Begins
Workmen were seen dismantling the controversial building this week, with the spa pool being the first element to be removed. The demolition marks the end of a lengthy planning dispute that began when the unauthorised structure was first reported to council officials in 2022.
A spokesperson for Central Bedfordshire Council confirmed: "An enforcement notice requiring the demolition of the now-unauthorised building was issued and this is being acted upon."
Legacy of a National Hero
Captain Sir Tom became a national treasure during the pandemic when his fundraising efforts captured the public's imagination. He was knighted by the Queen in a special ceremony at Windsor Castle in July 2020.
Despite the planning controversy, the family's charity, The Captain Tom Foundation, continues its work supporting causes close to the veteran's heart. A statement from the family said they "respect the council's decision" and are focusing on preserving Captain Sir Tom's remarkable legacy.
