US President Donald Trump has scrapped plans to send federal troops to the San Francisco Bay Area following widespread condemnation from California leaders and public protests. The decision came after Trump spoke with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and Silicon Valley executives, including Marc Benioff of Salesforce and Jensen Huang of Nvidia.
The proposed deployment, which involved more than 100 Customs and Border Protection agents and other federal personnel to the Coast Guard base in Alameda, was intended as part of a large-scale immigration enforcement operation. The plan had sparked outrage and street demonstrations across the region.
Trump stated that he would not proceed with the 'surge' of federal forces after the discussions, saying that Mayor Lurie and Silicon Valley leaders had asked him to give the city 'a chance'. The cancellation marks a reversal from earlier reports that the administration was poised to send additional agents to the area.
