Emmerdale's Cain faces cancer spread after accident

Cain Dingle is left horrified in Emmerdale as he suffers an accident that leads to further pain. The character, played by Jeff Hordley, has been struggling to come to terms with how his body has changed after undergoing a prostatectomy. He had originally wanted to cancel the surgery for fear of side effects, including loss of sexual ability and bladder control. His worst fears were realised when he woke up to find a catheter in place, believing it to be permanent. It was hard for him to accept that it was only temporary.

When the catheter was eventually removed, he discovered another side effect: an urgent need to urinate that was so severe it landed him in a prison cell after he was caught urinating in public. Worse still, he had accidentally wet himself. This led to a fear of being too far from a toilet, making him too anxious to return to work.

Just as he begins to get used to his new normal, he is hit with more bad news. It is Kyle's swearing-in at the Army Cadets, and Kyle is thrilled when Cain agrees to attend. Kyle proudly takes his oath, knowing his beloved dad is watching, but when he looks over, Cain is not there. Has Cain really bailed on him? Yes, but not intentionally. An urgent call from nature forced him to leave. Cain rushes to the Woolpack toilets and is horrified to find a wet patch on his trousers. He hides in embarrassment, but when Charles enters the gents, he sees the situation and returns with a clean pair of trousers. Charles and Bob offer kind words, assuring Cain that the matter will go no further. In a monumental moment, Cain agrees to accept help. With their support, he heads back to the ceremony and shamefully apologises to Kyle, who reassures his dad that everything is okay. Cain feels like a shell of himself, wondering when this will end.

The answer is not yet. Cain has a check-up at the hospital, and more bad news arrives. Ms Rhodes crushes both his and Moira's spirits when she reveals that the cancer has spread. This world-stopping news sends Cain into another spiral. He needs more treatment but will have to wait for his body to recover. The required radiotherapy will likely make the side effects permanent. They decide not to tell the boys, but with Cain's initial reluctance to undergo surgery, will he try to back out of this treatment as well?
