Shoppers have reported "fantastic" results from adding Wellgard Collagen Powder to their daily routine, with many crediting the supplement with a "huge improvement" in their complexion, stronger nails and healthier hair. The powder, which starts at £19.99 for a tub containing 31 daily servings, has earned an average rating of 4.8 out of five stars from more than 4,000 reviews.
How the supplement works
Wellgard Collagen Powder can be stirred into tea, coffee, yoghurt or other foods and drinks to provide a daily collagen boost. Made from naturally occurring Type I and III hydrolysed bovine collagen peptides, the brand describes it as an ideal supplement for skin, hair, nails and joints. It is formulated to have no noticeable taste or texture, according to Wellgard, making it easy to build into daily routines.
Shoppers can save with a three-pack for £50.97, working out at £16.99 per tub - or 55p per serving. The supplement is also available on Amazon.
Customer reviews and results
One reviewer, aged 60, said: "I have seen such changes in not only my health but also my skin and hair. I am 60 and people have recently asked me what am I using on my hair and how healthy it is, as well as my skin has a glow to it. I will continue to use this and recommend it!"
Another shopper shared: "The biggest thing I have noticed is my skin. It looks fantastic. The laughter lines have nearly disappeared, under my eyes is a huge improvement, my bags are non-existent, I feel my skin is so much younger looking and I feel it's glowing." They added: "I never want to stop taking it as the benefits to skin are fantastic. I wish I had taken before and after pictures. I am even confident to go without makeup which I would have never done before."
A third reviewer said: "I have been using this product for a few months now. It has significantly improved the appearance of my skin. My hair also seems to be growing faster and looks healthier. I am very pleased with the results. I would highly recommend this collagen supplement to others."
Comparisons and alternatives
While 85% of shoppers have given Wellgard Collagen Powder a five-star rating, not everyone agreed that it had no taste. One person remarked: "Not keen on the little taste. However, it's very worth it for the results - my cellulite is looking much better." Another shopper agreed: "I sometimes notice a slight taste - the final sip of coffee from my mug does have a slightly weird taste. But it's not too bad and I can live with it as most of my coffee tastes fine."
Elsewhere, the bestselling collagen supplement at Boots is the retailer's own brand Marine Collagen Tablets, priced at £20 for a tub of 30, made with fish collagen peptides and including Vitamin C. Holland & Barrett also stocks Marine Collagen with Vitamin C at £49.99 for 180 tablets, with an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars from 1,500 reviews.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, providing strength, structure and support to skin, muscles, bones and connective tissues. From the mid-to-late 20s, collagen production begins to decrease by 1% a year on average, which can contribute to signs of ageing. A study published earlier this year in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum involving more than 7,000 participants found that taking collagen supplements consistently for two to three months or longer can improve skin elasticity and hydration, though it noted that collagen supplements were not shown to significantly reduce wrinkles or improve skin roughness.
Wellgard notes that anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical supervision should consult their GP before taking collagen powder. It adds: "Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied diet and healthy lifestyle."
