Katie Taylor enjoyed a bowl of porridge topped with berries, fruit and Manuka honey as her breakfast during training camp before her final fight, a meal that offers notable heart health benefits.
Porridge and heart health
The 40-year-old's breakfast choice, revealed to Sky Sports, includes oats, which provide wholegrains, fibre and slow-release carbohydrates, while fruit adds vitamins and other nutrients. Porridge is also a filling option that supplies energy without complicated preparation, suiting a busy training schedule.
Oats contain a soluble fibre called beta-glucan. The British Heart Foundation says consuming around 3g of oat beta-glucan daily, as part of a healthy diet, can help lower cholesterol levels, though not every bowl of porridge automatically counts as a heart-health treatment.
Balanced diet and career finale
Taylor has described her overall diet as balanced, including chicken, pasta, salmon and green vegetables, with snacks such as yoghurt and fruit. This approach supported a career spanning Olympic gold at London 2012 and multiple undisputed world titles.
She turned professional in 2016 and built a 26-1 record, with her only defeat coming against Chantelle Cameron before she avenged it in a rematch. On September 5, at Dublin's Croke Park, Taylor faced previously unbeaten French fighter Flora Pili in front of 83,000 spectators. She controlled the 10-round contest and won by unanimous decision, with two judges scoring 100-90 and the third 98-91.
The victory made Taylor undisputed world super-lightweight champion as she ended her career. After the fight, she placed her gloves in the centre of the ring to mark the close of her professional boxing career.
