Fried Eggs Get Crispier with Feta Cheese: Simple Breakfast Hack
Fried Eggs Crispier with Feta: Simple Breakfast Hack

Fried eggs are a breakfast staple, and this super-simple trick takes them to the next level. By adding feta cheese to the pan before cooking, you can achieve a crispier, more flavorful result. I first tried this while out for brunch and have been making it at home ever since.

Why Feta Works

While I'm undoubtedly the type of person who believes cheese improves virtually everything, this genuinely holds true for these fried eggs. The feta creates a crispy, golden edge that complements the soft yolk perfectly. They make an ideal accompaniment to smashed avocado on toast, or, if you fancy something slightly more elaborate, you can incorporate pesto into the pan alongside the cheese and eggs.

Quick and Easy Method

This enhancement requires just approximately two minutes longer than you'd typically spend frying an egg without any additions. Start by warming some olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Crumble in the feta around the edge, leaving room for the egg in the centre. Cook until the feta begins to bubble, then crack the egg into the centre. Keep cooking until the egg white has firmed, reducing the heat as needed to prevent the feta from scorching. Serve straight away on toast.

Tips for Perfect Feta Eggs

  • Keep the temperature low to avoid burning the feta.
  • If the feta begins looking burnt before the egg is cooked, reduce the heat immediately.
  • For extra flavour, add a spoonful of pesto alongside the feta.

Ingredients

  • Crumbled feta cheese
  • One large egg
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Quantities depend on how cheesy you want the egg and how many you are making. Personally, I prefer keeping the feta reasonably soft, though it can be cooked to whatever level of crispiness suits your individual preference.
