Keeping your home dust-free can be a real challenge, especially in spring when pollen is high and windows are open, but one everyday household item makes cleaning blinds and skirting boards so much simpler.
Spring brings welcomed sunshine after the long winter months, but it can quickly leave your home looking dirty as dust builds up rapidly. Flowers are starting to blossom, which often results in pollen combining with dust, and when windows are left open, the debris moves indoors.
Attempting to remove dust from tricky spots like skirting boards and window blinds can be frustrating, but there's a method to simplify the cleaning process considerably. Grace Micere, from Bare Kind, has strongly recommended wiping surfaces with old socks as they're very efficient at capturing dust and preventing it from spreading. She explained: "Simply slip one over your hand and use it as a dusting mitt. They work great for cleaning furniture, blinds, baseboards and much more."
How do old socks prevent dust in your home?
Dust clings to surfaces because static electricity often builds on materials including wood and plastic. Blinds, skirting boards and even wooden flooring tend to attract the most dust since they're positioned near windows or lower down where dust naturally gathers.
Wiping these surfaces with an old sock creates friction and produces a small static charge which attracts dust. This also minimises additional static on these surfaces, helping dust stay away for longer periods and keeping a cleaner home. This cleaning technique works best with fuzzy or textured socks, since dust tends to attach better to synthetic fibres due to their higher static electricity production.
Cleaning dust with old socks
Start by slipping the sock onto your hand like a glove and dampening it slightly. A touch of moisture helps dust stick better to the sock fibres and simplifies the cleaning process. Then, glide your hand across the tops and edges of dusty surfaces. This works well on skirting boards, radiators and window blinds.
When finished, shake the sock thoroughly over a bin to remove the dust, then pop it in the washing machine. Clean surfaces weekly during spring to minimise static buildup and help prevent dust from settling in your home. The duration dust stays away depends on window ventilation and your local weather conditions, as wind can transport more dust and pollen indoors.
