Brits have been advised to introduce spring onions to their diets to support good blood pressure and heart health, according to a registered dietitian. The vegetable costs around 50p in most UK supermarkets.
Why spring onions help
Nicolle Cucco, a registered dietitian at Muscle Booster, says strong-tasting vegetables like spring onions help people add flavour to their dishes without relying on salt or saturated fats.
"Spring onions are an inexpensive way to add more vegetables and flavour to meals without relying on large amounts of salt, butter or saturated fat," she said. "They also provide vitamin C and other plant compounds."
Simple swaps for heart health
Cucco recommends simple swaps like using fresh herbs, garlic, spring onions and spices to reduce salt intake, which can help support healthy blood pressure.
Other budget-friendly foods she recommends include beetroot, edamame beans, chickpeas and avocados. "When it comes to supporting heart health, you don’t need to rely on expensive health foods or supplements. Some of the most affordable foods in the supermarket are packed with nutrients that can support cardiovascular health, including fibre, healthy fats, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals," she said.
