Natural yogurt, a supermarket staple priced at 55p, is being highlighted as a food that can help manage blood pressure and goes with "almost anything".
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is common, particularly in older adults, and "can lead to serious problems like heart attacks or strokes", according to the NHS website. It adds: "There are usually no symptoms, so you may not realise you have it." Symptoms can include headaches, blurred vision, and chest pain.
What the Expert Says
Elisha Edwards, a Personal Trainer and Sports Nutrition Advisor at healthcare charity Nuffield Health, highlighted natural yogurt as one of several food options beneficial for lowering or maintaining blood pressure. She noted it is high in potassium and calcium and is a "probiotic-rich" choice "that contributes to a heart-healthy diet and helps regulate blood pressure".
Low-fat options are widely available, with Morrisons and Aldi selling them for 55p. "You can eat yoghurt with almost anything," Ms Edwards added. "We love it with a small scoop of chia seed and cacao and a handful of fruit and nut mix topped with a tablespoon of agave honey."
Not Suitable for Everyone
Natural yogurt is not suitable for those with allergies to its ingredients, and a varied diet is still needed to obtain all necessary nutrients. Hypertension is often called a "silent killer" because people may not realise they have it until it leads to other health issues.
The only way to find out is to have blood pressure checked, the NHS website says. If diagnosed, lifestyle changes such as cutting out smoking and reducing alcohol and salt intake can help. Medications may also be prescribed by a GP depending on medical circumstances.
