Brave double amputee Tony Hudgell has undergone yet another surgical procedure, marking his 33rd general anaesthetic, as he continues to confront the devastating aftermath of abuse suffered during infancy at the hands of his birth parents.
The Horrific Origins of Tony's Suffering
At just 41 days old, Tony was subjected to severe abuse by his biological parents, Jody Simpson and Anthony Smith. This brutal assault resulted in multiple fractures, dislocations, and blunt force trauma to his face, ultimately triggering organ failure, toxic shock, and sepsis. He was left without medical attention for ten agonising days, enduring unimaginable pain.
A Mother's Heartbreak Amidst Terminal Illness
Witnessing her son's relentless suffering has left his 58-year-old adoptive mother, Paula Hudgell OBE, heartbroken. Paula, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, confessed with profound sadness, 'I might not see him grow into adulthood.' Her emotional exhaustion is palpable as she describes the ordeal.
Paula told the Daily Mail, 'Watching Tony go through operation after operation has been one of the most emotionally exhausting experiences imaginable. Each time, there’s that same moment that never gets easier - the quiet, heavy dread as he’s taken in, and the unbearable sight of him drifting off to sleep. No matter how many times it happens, it never feels routine. It never feels okay.'
Recent Surgical Intervention in Sheffield
Last Friday, the 11-year-old was admitted to Sheffield Children's Hospital for an operation to remove a plate and pins from his reconstructed hip. This procedure followed a fracture sustained just before Christmas 2024, when Tony caught his leg while walking across a room.
Consultant orthopaedic surgeon James Fernandes, who led pioneering five-hour leg and hip surgery on Tony in March 2024 to fit a false hip and lengthen his left femur, performed the latest repair. Tony, whose legs were amputated at age three, faces six weeks of recovery to allow the bone to heal.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Despite the challenges, Paula praised Tony's incredible strength. 'He is doing remarkably well. High spirits around the pain. Playing his Switch Minecraft and Roblox, watching some films and playing some games - anything to try to take his mind off it,' she shared. A touching photo posted on Instagram before the surgery sparked an outpouring of support from friends and followers.
Justice and Ongoing Campaigns
Jody Simpson and Anthony Smith were jailed for ten years in 2018 for child cruelty but have since been released under licence - Jody in 2023 and Anthony last September. Paula has expressed deep upset over their early release, calling it 'a betrayal of justice' and noting Anthony's lack of remorse.
The Hudgell family's relentless advocacy led to 'Tony's Law' in 2022, which increased maximum sentences for child harm offences. Recently, they celebrated another victory with the establishment of a child safety register covering neglect, cruelty, and other abuses.
Paula's Personal Battle and Inspiration
Paula, awarded an OBE in 2023 for services to children, battles stage four bowel cancer diagnosed as terminal in July 2025. She remains driven by her campaign work, stating, 'this campaign is the fire in my belly. I don't want to go anywhere until I know that there is a child cruelty register. How long I've got, who knows? I'm not going anywhere without a fight. Tony's my inspiration.'
Tony's remarkable spirit has earned him widespread recognition. At age nine, he became the youngest recipient of the British Empire Medal in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to preventing child abuse. In 2020, inspired by Captain Tom Moore, he walked 10 kilometres on prosthetic legs, raising £1.7 million for Evelina London Children's Hospital.
As Tony continues his recovery, his story stands as a testament to human resilience and the ongoing fight for justice and protection for vulnerable children.
