Specsavers stores in Airdrie and Coatbridge have launched a new clinical service designed to improve symptoms of dry eyes and enhance comfort for customers with the condition.
The new ZEST (Zocular Eyelid System Technology) service is carried out in-store by a trained clinician and is described as a quick, comfortable and non-invasive procedure lasting around 10-20 minutes.
How the procedure works
ZEST uses a natural, okra-based gel and a specialised swab to deep-clean the eyelids and lashes. By clearing away biofilm, debris and mites that block vital oil glands, it aims to deliver immediate, soothing relief, allowing people to regain comfort and focus on daily life.
Dry eye symptoms can vary from person to person, but common symptoms regularly include sore, irritated or itchy eyes, redness, watery eyes and blurred vision. The condition is becoming increasingly common due to factors such as increased screen time, air conditioning, heating and aging.

Ewan Grieve, retail director at Specsavers Airdrie and Coatbridge, said: "Many people assume dry eyes are simply something they must live with, but untreated dry eye can significantly impact quality of life, comfort and even vision."
He added: "Symptoms can sometimes worsen over time if the underlying cause is not addressed properly. Seeing an optometrist or contact lens optician is important because they can assess the health of the eye and eyelids, identify the root cause of the dry eyes problem and recommend the most appropriate procedure plan."

Grieve noted that many customers say that after procedures like ZEST, it feels similar to the difference noticed when cleaning glasses — everything becomes clearer, more comfortable and easier to focus on. "It's a simple step that can have a big impact on how you see and feel," he said.
Assessment and aftercare
About the new service, Grieve added: "Patients will receive a full assessment beforehand to determine whether ZEST is suitable for them."
He also highlighted that while many patients notice significant improvement after one session, dry eye is often a chronic condition, so ongoing management and at-home care may still be recommended to maintain results.
