Harlaxton Manor: 'Hidden Hogwarts' Opens to Public

Harlaxton Manor, the Grade I-listed estate nicknamed 'Lincolnshire's hidden Hogwarts', will open its doors to the public over the August bank holiday weekend. The summer open house event takes place on Sunday, August 30, and Monday, August 31, from 10am to 5pm, offering a rare chance to explore the manor's interiors, formal gardens and parkland.

A 19th-Century Architectural Fantasy

Built in the 19th century for Gregory Gregory, with construction beginning in 1831 and completed around 1851, the manor rises dramatically from about 300 acres of parkland and gardens. Inspired by his travels across Britain and Europe, Gregory combined Elizabethan and Jacobean architecture, Gothic details and Baroque grandeur into a theatrical, extravagant whole.

Today, the manor is owned by the University of Evansville in Indiana and serves as Harlaxton College, a study-abroad campus for students from around the world. Despite its modern role, the estate retains its storybook character, with towers, ornate stonework and an imposing silhouette.

Grantham: An Underrated Market Town

Harlaxton is located near Grantham, an underrated market town nestled along the River Witham close to the Lincolnshire–Nottinghamshire border. With roots in Saxon times, the town became an important market centre by the 11th century, growing wealthy through the wool and leather trades.
