Sir Kenny Dalglish, the legendary former Liverpool player and manager, has revealed he is undergoing treatment for cancer. The 75-year-old made the announcement after inadvertently posting the news on social media.
In a statement on Tuesday, Dalglish said: “As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well. Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.”
Dalglish, who was knighted in 2018 for services to football, charity and the city of Liverpool, asked for privacy for himself and his family. He also thanked medical staff for their care and discretion.
Liverpool FC expressed their support, saying: “The support, best wishes and love of everyone at the club are with Kenny and his family. The club would also like to underscore his request for privacy moving forward.”
Dalglish’s announcement comes a day after fellow former Liverpool player Kevin Keegan revealed he had been diagnosed with stage-four cancer. Dalglish replaced Keegan at Liverpool in 1977.
As a player, Dalglish won six English league titles and three European Cups for Liverpool, scoring 172 goals in 515 appearances. He later managed the club to further success, including the league and FA Cup double in 1986.
