Olivia Bowen Reveals Husband Alex's Vasectomy After Traumatic Birth Ordeal

Reality television star Olivia Bowen has publicly disclosed that her husband Alex has undergone a vasectomy procedure. This permanent decision follows the couple's harrowing experience during the birth of their daughter Siena, which left Olivia fearing for her life. The Love Island alumni, who met on the popular show and married in 2018, have determined their family is complete with their two children.

A Decision Born from Trauma

In a candid new interview, the thirty-two-year-old mother explained their definitive choice. 'We are absolutely done. Alex had a vasectomy the other day, so no more kids for us,' Olivia stated firmly. She elaborated on the multifaceted reasoning behind this permanent step, citing personal, environmental, and external factors. 'There were a lot of reasons – personal ones, environmental ones, external ones, but ultimately we just feel complete now,' she told The Sun.

The couple shares six-month-old daughter Siena and three-year-old son Abel. Olivia's childbirth experience with Siena in August was profoundly traumatic, involving a major haemorrhage during an emergency Caesarean section that caused her to lose nearly three litres of blood. 'I could never go through childbirth again,' she confessed, recalling how close she came to death.

The Harrowing Birth Experience

Olivia has been remarkably open about the details of the traumatic delivery, which she also documented on her ITV2 reality series, Olivia & Alex: Parenthood. The initial plan for a home birth with a birthing pool was abandoned after ten hours of labour when Olivia felt abnormal sensations. 'I felt something that didn't feel right,' she recounted. Medical examination revealed her bladder had prolapsed into her cervix, obstructing the baby's exit and necessitating an urgent hospital transfer and C-section.

The surgery took a terrifying turn when Olivia began hemorrhaging severely. 'The nurse started calling out how much blood I was losing and all I could hear was 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and it was going up and up quickly,' she described, her voice breaking with emotion. 'They started yelling, major haemorrhage across all the surgery room.' Olivia ultimately lost 2.8 litres of blood—a critically dangerous amount given the average adult has approximately 4.5 litres total.

'To feel that you are that close to losing your life, was very very scary,' Olivia admitted, praising the National Health Service staff who saved her. 'The NHS were amazing, they saved my life.' While Olivia says she has processed the ordeal, her husband Alex, thirty-four, admitted to being deeply traumatised by witnessing the event, calling it the worst thing he has ever seen.

Understanding Vasectomy

The couple's decision led to Alex undergoing a vasectomy, a form of male sterilisation. This surgical procedure involves cutting or sealing the tubes that carry sperm, providing permanent contraception. According to NHS guidelines, it is typically performed under local anaesthetic and takes approximately fifteen minutes.

Potential risks and complications associated with vasectomy include:

  • Haematoma (a collection of blood inside the scrotum)
  • Sperm granulomas (hard lumps caused by sperm leakage)
  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Long-term testicular pain, which may require further intervention

Medical practitioners often exercise caution with younger patients, as the procedure is considered irreversible. The Bowens, however, have expressed absolute certainty about their family planning conclusion, influenced significantly by Olivia's life-threatening childbirth experience.

Olivia reflected on their journey, mentioning the loss of Siena's twin during pregnancy as another factor. 'We’re lucky enough to have two and I think what happened with Siena’s twin made me think: "I just can’t do that again",' she shared. The couple now focuses on their gratitude for their existing family and Olivia's survival, marking a definitive end to their family expansion with Alex's recent medical procedure.
