NHS Orders Removal of 287 Patients from Troubled Mental Health Hospital After Police Probes

Health chiefs have mandated the immediate removal of 287 inpatients from a privately-run mental health hospital following a series of alarming police investigations into allegations of patient abuse, neglect, and deaths. The directive targets one of the sites operated by St Andrew's Healthcare, a registered charity that provides specialist mental health care.

Escalating Concerns Over Patient Safety

On Monday, NHS England issued a formal letter to local health authorities, instructing them to develop comprehensive plans to transfer patients from the Northampton facility to alternative hospitals or discharge them appropriately. This decisive action comes after NHS officials had previously issued a warning to St Andrew's Healthcare in December 2025 regarding concerns over substandard care.

The Independent has reported that the hospital provider has faced multiple police probes, including investigations into allegations of abuse, rape, and patient fatalities. In January, it was revealed that more than a dozen staff members had been arrested in connection with these ongoing investigations.

Timeline of Police Investigations and Patient Deaths

The situation at St Andrew's Healthcare has been deteriorating over recent years:

  • In October 2024, a corporate manslaughter investigation was launched following the death of a teenager at the facility. This probe has since been discontinued.
  • Following a second patient death in February 2025, Northamptonshire Police arrested five individuals in relation to corporate manslaughter and alleged wilful neglect by a care worker. Four workers have been released with no further action, while one person remains on bail for alleged wilful neglect.
  • In July 2025, eight care workers were arrested on suspicion of wilful neglect and ill treatment, all of whom have been released on bail. One of these workers was subsequently arrested in connection with an allegation of patient rape.

The police have taken no further action regarding the corporate manslaughter aspect of their investigation following consultations with the Crown Prosecution Service.

Regulatory Actions and Financial Context

The Care Quality Commission placed restrictions on new admissions to St Andrew's Hospital following an inspection in July 2025. NHS England has now escalated its response, stating in their letter: "We still do not have adequate assurance that patient safety is improving at the rate it needs to and our concerns about patient safety remain; we therefore must act now to ensure patients receive the care and treatment they deserve."

St Andrew's Healthcare operates four hospitals across Northampton, Birmingham, and Essex, receiving approximately £206 million annually from NHS contracts in 2023-24. The Northampton site alone houses more than 400 NHS patients, with an average bed cost of £685 per day. In 2023-24, the facility received at least £3.6 million from the NHS for patients who could not be treated locally, excluding additional costs for specialist services such as beds for deaf patients with mental health needs.

NHS Response and Future Monitoring

An NHS England spokesperson emphasized: "The NHS is taking action to remove patients from the St Andrew's Northampton site to protect their welfare, given the lack of improvements and unacceptable issues identified." They acknowledged the anxiety this decision would cause and committed to ensuring alternative placements are managed safely and sensitively.

The NHS is providing 24/7 enhanced oversight at the site until all patients have been relocated and is supporting alternative care facilities to ensure patient interests are prioritized. Importantly, the removal order applies only to the Northampton hospital, though NHS England continues to monitor the provider's Birmingham and Essex sites.

A spokesperson for St Andrew's Healthcare responded: "We note the letter from NHS England. We are working through the implications for staff and our patients. We look forward to working with NHS England on a long-term plan to support patients."

The Independent has reached out to Northamptonshire Police for additional comment regarding their ongoing investigations at the facility.
