NHS chiefs have confirmed a major change coming into effect from 2027, potentially affecting all users across England. A new post on X from the NHS states: 'From 2027, NHS Online will give people the option to get planned care through the NHS App. It will connect people with specialist clinicians across the country – helping them get care sooner.'
Details of the New Service
The NHS Online website further explains that from 2027, the Online NHS Trust will give people in England the option to receive planned care via the NHS App. This service will connect individuals with specialist clinicians nationwide, enabling them to receive care sooner without always needing to travel. The Online NHS Trust was established this week with the goal of making it 'simpler and faster for people to get the safe NHS care they need.'
Optional and Complementary to In-Person Care
Using the service will be optional, and anyone who prefers in-person appointments can continue to do so as usual, NHS bosses have assured. The new services being developed are intended to improve access to care, make it easier for people to use NHS services, and reduce waiting times.
What the App Will Offer
From 2027, people in England will be able to use the app to gain advice on managing medical conditions, access digital prescriptions, have online consultations, and book tests, treatments, or procedures. Initially, the service will focus on conditions where existing evidence demonstrates that digital care works well and current waiting times are long. These include menopause and menstrual issues, iron deficiency anaemia, prostate conditions, inflammatory bowel disease, as well as cataracts, glaucoma, and medical retina conditions.
