Mother's Heartbreak After Waking to Find Baby Son Had Stopped Breathing
Mum's Horror: Woke from Nap to Find Baby Not Breathing

Mother's Heartbreaking Account of Losing Baby to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

A young mother has described the devastating moment she woke from a nap to discover her infant son had stopped breathing beside her. Courtney Smith, aged 21, says life will never be the same following the tragic death of her two-month-old baby boy, Remy Smith. The Eastbourne, East Sussex resident is now speaking out to raise crucial awareness about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, a condition she admits she had never heard of before experiencing this unimaginable loss.

The Morning That Turned Into Every Parent's Worst Nightmare

Courtney recalls what began as an ordinary morning in February of last year quickly descending into horror. After her husband Harvey, a 21-year-old painter and decorator, left for work, Courtney decided to have a nap with their three-year-old daughter Isla-Mae and baby Remy. "We were cuddling in bed watching movies at around 10:30am," Courtney explained. "I was breastfeeding Remy and started to get a migraine, so I decided we would all go for a nap once he finished feeding."

"Isla-Mae fell asleep first, so I settled Remy down beside me and fell asleep," Courtney continued. "At 1pm I woke up from my nap and realized Remy hadn't woken up for his next feed. It just looked like he was sleeping peacefully."

The terrifying reality became apparent when Courtney picked up her son. "Instead of waking up, he was completely limp and floppy," she recounted, her voice trembling with emotion even in recollection.

Emergency Response and Hospital Tragedy

Courtney immediately dialed 999 and received instructions to perform CPR on her unresponsive baby while her husband Harvey rushed home from work. Paramedics arrived promptly and took over resuscitation attempts before rushing the infant to hospital. Despite their best efforts, doctors delivered the devastating news at 4pm on February 11 that there was nothing more they could do.

"I barely remember exactly what was said by the doctors," Courtney admitted. "Just that they'd tried everything possible but Remy was still showing no signs of life. They brought us back in to say goodbye to our son before he was officially pronounced dead."

The young mother described collapsing to her knees and breaking down in her husband's arms. "I couldn't understand why this was happening to us or what I'd done wrong," she confessed. "I instantly blamed myself for his passing. The doctors assured me it wasn't my fault and there was nothing I could have done to save him."

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Diagnosis

Medical professionals initially suggested the situation resembled a SIDS passing, but confirmation came two months later following Remy's autopsy. The official cause of death was determined to be Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, a diagnosis that brought little comfort to the grieving parents.

"I was devastated to get the conclusion of SIDS," Courtney revealed. "I felt like it wasn't a true answer, and we still had so many unanswered questions about why this happened to Remy. After losing him, our lives went completely downhill."

The couple spent most days in bed, barely eating and overwhelmed by grief, with Harvey stopping work for several months. Courtney struggled to function on a daily basis and had to send her daughter to stay with her grandmother. "I felt I couldn't look after Isla-Mae the way she deserved," she explained. "I was an emotional wreck every day, trying to be strong whenever I spoke to her, but our phone calls and FaceTimes were always cut short because she'd ask where her brother was. I physically couldn't answer her, so I'd just break down."

Family Impact and Continuing Grief

Isla-Mae was just two years old when her brother died, but Courtney says she still remembers distressing details from that tragic day. "Isla-Mae was deeply impacted," Courtney noted. "When an ambulance drives past, she still asks if her brother is in the back of it and even tries to perform CPR on her baby dolls. I struggle with how to respond when she does this because she doesn't understand what happened."

The family had been overjoyed when they discovered they were expecting Remy. "I was instantly happy and knew he'd be so loved by all of his family, especially his big sister," Courtney remembered fondly. "She was so excited to have a little brother and couldn't wait for him to arrive. Remy was a very happy, bubbly little boy with a smile that would make any pain disappear. He loved cuddles with his big sister, who would always make him laugh, and he adored listening to music with his daddy."

Raising Awareness and Looking Forward

Courtney is now expecting another daughter, Bella-Rae, due in May. She hopes that sharing Remy's story will raise vital awareness about SIDS, which claims approximately 200 babies' lives each year in the UK according to recent statistics.

"I'm sharing our story to raise awareness about SIDS because it's not spoken about enough," Courtney emphasized. "Before we lost Remy, I'd never even heard of it, despite him being my second-born child. I still have days where I can't get out of bed or think about anything else but Remy. On those difficult days, I cuddle something of his and cry if I need to."

The family continues their journey of healing while honoring Remy's memory, hoping their painful experience might help prevent similar tragedies for other families through increased awareness and education about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
