Melanie Sykes reveals 'two-thirds bald' hair loss amid auto-immune illness battle
Melanie Sykes 'two-thirds bald' from auto-immune illness

Beloved television presenter Melanie Sykes has shared a devastating health update with her fans, revealing she has lost a significant amount of hair due to a painful auto-immune condition.

A Heartbreaking Health Revelation

In a candid video posted to her followers, the 1990s icon appeared visibly unwell. Sykes disclosed she is now "two-thirds bald" as a direct result of her illness, choosing to wear a hat and scarf in the clip. She spoke openly about the physical toll, stating, "I'm in so much pain. Honestly, my lips and my eyes are just so bad."

The star, who shot to fame in the iconic Boddington's beer advertisements and presented shows like The Big Breakfast and Today With Des and Mel, explained she is suffering from an auto-immune disease. This is a condition where the body's own immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue.

Understanding Auto-Immune Conditions

Sykes's diagnosis highlights a growing health concern. Auto-immune conditions are now believed to affect roughly one in ten people in the population. Medical science recognises more than 80 distinct types, including rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. Despite their prevalence, the root causes of most auto-immune diseases remain largely unknown to researchers.

Despite the severe symptoms, Melanie has maintained a remarkably positive outlook. "Every time I say I'm bald, I laugh. I don't know why. Thank God I can laugh. Always laugh," she told her audience, demonstrating her resilience.

A Shift to a Spiritual Path

The presenter also revealed how her life has changed direction in recent times, focusing on a "very, very spiritual existence." She had embarked on a meditation teacher training course but was forced to stop in the final stages due to her declining health. "In the last three months, I’ve done a meditation teacher training course. I was too ill to finish it. Literally the last two days of it, I couldn’t do," she explained.

Accompanying her video was a poignant message on Instagram that reflected her philosophical approach: "I am Love, I am the conduit to love, I am just the hole in the flute." This update has drawn an outpouring of support from fans and fellow celebrities alike, who have praised her bravery and honesty in sharing such a personal struggle.
