Labrador Beau Saves Owner's Life After Cardiac Arrest

David Howarth and his faithful labrador, Beau, share an unbreakable bond forged on the sands of Sandbanks Beach in Poole, Dorset. This story of loyalty and survival began eight years ago, when David, grieving the loss of his wife, Jo, to cancer, sought a fresh start by moving from London to the coastal haven of Poole. In search of companionship, he welcomed a black-coated labrador puppy into his life, naming him Beau as a tribute to the time he and Jo had spent living in France.

A Mischievous Puppy with a Heart of Gold

Beau, a gun dog from Derbyshire with deep brown eyes, proved to be an adorable yet mischievous companion from the outset. At just six months old, he rummaged through a fisherman's bucket and swallowed a fishing line and hook, narrowly avoiding surgery when it passed through his system naturally. Despite such antics, Beau seamlessly integrated into David's outdoor lifestyle, accompanying him on sailing and paddleboarding adventures and waiting patiently on the shore during daily sea swims.

The Fateful Day That Changed Everything

In the wintry days between Christmas and New Year in 2024, David and Beau ventured to the beach for their routine. After a brisk swim in the cold water, David, an active 70-year-old, felt fit and strong, prompting him to sprint along the sand with Beau happily by his side. However, before he could reach his towel, everything went black—David had suffered a cardiac arrest, his heart stopping dead.

Seeing his owner slumped over a rock, Beau sprang into action without hesitation. He jumped up and down on David's body and the surrounding sand, barking frantically and running around in a desperate attempt to draw attention. Beau's instincts told him there was still life in David, and he refused to give up.

Strangers Turned Lifesavers

Beau's frantic efforts caught the eye of Claire Dashwood, a healthcare worker walking with her partner about 100 metres away. Rushing over, Claire found David unconscious, blue, and freezing cold. She immediately began CPR, with Beau licking her face as if to encourage her to persist. Soon after, two doctors walking their dog joined the effort, and together, the trio kept David's blood circulating until paramedics arrived.

David was rushed to Bournemouth Hospital, where a defibrillator was implanted near his heart. A week later, when reunited with Beau, the labrador was beside himself with joy, barking, jumping, and showering David with kisses, bringing tears to his eyes. David reflects on that day with immense gratitude for the strangers—now his friends—who came to his rescue and for Beau's unwavering loyalty in sounding the alarm.

A Lasting Tribute to a Faithful Friend

To honour Beau's lifesaving role, David now wears a transfer tattoo of a dog paw over the defibrillator in his chest, symbolising that Beau will always be close to his heart. This poignant gesture underscores the deep bond they share, forged through adversity and a second chance at life. David's story serves as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary connections between humans and their pets, highlighting how a loyal companion can become a true hero in moments of crisis.
