John Barnes Reveals Prostate Cancer Diagnosis, Urges Men to Speak Out
John Barnes Reveals Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Former Liverpool winger John Barnes has revealed he had his prostate removed following a cancer diagnosis, speaking out about what he calls a "taboo subject" for men.

"Not many people know and it’s a bit of a taboo subject because we support women with breast cancer and it’s not even an issue," he told Times Radio. Barnes stressed that "a lot of men don’t want to admit it or want to have it done because it makes them feel less than a man." He added: "Men have to bite the bullet and swallow their pride and admit if they have problems."

Chiara De Biase, fundraising and health strategy director at Prostate Cancer UK, expressed gratitude for his candour. "We’re so grateful to John for talking so openly about his prostate cancer diagnosis and we’re happy to hear he’s had successful treatment," she said.

The 62-year-old former footballer urged men to overcome any embarrassment and seek medical advice promptly. He highlighted that early detection is crucial for successful treatment. Barnes, who played for England and Liverpool, hopes his story will encourage more men to discuss their health concerns openly.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men in the UK, with around 52,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Charities have long campaigned for greater awareness and for men to talk about symptoms without stigma. Barnes’s openness marks a significant step in breaking down barriers around male health issues.
