The world is facing a severe cancer workforce crisis, with a projected shortfall of 100 million healthcare workers by 2050, according to a report presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting in Chicago. The study warns that as cancer diagnoses rise to an estimated 35.3 million annually by 2050—equivalent to nearly 100,000 cases per day—healthcare systems risk being overwhelmed.
The largest staffing gaps are expected in nursing (65 million) and diagnostic roles (16 million), with the global cancer incidence rate predicted to increase by 21% from 165 to 200 per 100,000 people between 2025 and 2050. Currently, about 20 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year, but one in three cases go undiagnosed worldwide, rising to 60% in parts of Africa.
Co-author Mark Lawler, a professor at Queen’s University Belfast, described the findings as “sobering” and a “wake-up call”. He highlighted the stark contrast between a 15 million increase in cancer cases and a 100 million decrease in staffing, urging immediate action. Without intervention, cancer deaths could reach 18.5 million annually by 2050.
While high-income countries have seen improved cancer survival rates—projected to exceed 60% by 2050—the workforce crisis will still hinder progress. Dr Hedvig Hricak, from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, called for urgent, country-specific strategies including smarter workforce use, task-shifting, and adoption of AI and digital health tools.
The report recommends implementing national cancer control plans, investing in technology and education, expanding partnerships, and ensuring sustainable funding. It estimates that investing in the cancer workforce now could avert 170 million deaths between 2030 and 2050 and deliver $120 trillion in net economic benefits.
Co-author Dr Peter Kingham emphasised the importance of cancer prevention through healthier diets and active lifestyles, but noted that the growing and ageing global population will inevitably increase cancer cases. “This demographic shift reflects progress in global health, but demands an equally ambitious response in cancer care,” he said.
