Cleaning expert Andrew Haydon from Simply Plastics has identified five commonly neglected areas in UK households that can harbour bacteria, grime and unpleasant odours. While many focus on visible surfaces like floors and counters, these hidden hotspots can compromise home hygiene if left unchecked.
The area behind the kitchen bin is a prime culprit, where food spills and splashes accumulate, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Haydon recommends pulling out the bin weekly to wipe the wall and floor with warm soapy water or mild disinfectant.
Light switches and walls near switches are touched frequently but rarely cleaned. Using antibacterial wipes or a damp cloth with soapy water can kill germs and keep them looking fresh.
Cooking splashes and drips can build up behind cupboards, especially where bottles or mugs are stored. A warm soapy cloth or soft brush for stubborn marks will prevent sticky patches and stains.
Mould and mildew thrive in bathroom corners and between tiles, often missed during quick cleans. Haydon suggests using a grout cleaner or baking soda paste weekly, ensuring the area is dried properly afterward.
Fridge rubber seals collect food bits and sticky residue, leading to bad smells and reduced efficiency. Wiping with warm soapy water and drying thoroughly weekly can prevent mould and keep the fridge working smoothly.
