Gemma Collins Opens Up About Ozempic Experience: From Liberation to Painful Side Effects

Reality television personality Gemma Collins has candidly shared the details of her personal journey with the weight-loss medication Ozempic, describing an initial phase of feeling "liberated" before encountering severe side effects that halted her treatment.

The Initial Liberation: A Changed Relationship with Food

The 45-year-old star, known for her appearances on shows like The Only Way Is Essex, discussed her experience during a conversation about the popular drug in the I'm A Celebrity camp. Collins admitted she initially found the medication "life changing" and profoundly liberating.

"When I was first doing it, me and Rami went for a Turkish meal, and in my whole life, if a bread basket went down, oh mate, there's nothing like a bread basket," Collins recalled. "Do you know how weird it was for me to sit there. Have the bread in front of me and not want it."

She emphasized how bizarre this experience felt, both for herself and her companion, given her usual enthusiasm for such foods. "Can you imagine how bizarre that was for him, because normally I would want it. It was great, it was liberating. I had freedom," she explained, highlighting how the drug's appetite-suppressing effects created a sense of control she hadn't previously experienced.

The Turning Point: Escalating Doses and Painful Consequences

However, Collins' positive experience took a dramatic turn as she increased her dosage. "So when I moved up through the doses, I ended up going up to 15 on it, 15mg, and then that is when a few weeks later I got the pain," she revealed.

This pain manifested as a gallbladder attack, a known potential side effect of semaglutide medications like Ozempic, which forced her to discontinue use of the drug entirely. The reality star's journey was abruptly cut short by this painful medical complication.

Context and Personal Reflection on Weight Loss Struggles

Collins placed her Ozempic experience within the broader context of her lifelong relationship with weight and dieting. "But I'm big anyway, I mean, I could lose 3 stone and probably wouldn't look that different. I've done everything. Everything," she stated, acknowledging her body type and extensive history with various weight management approaches.

"I've done every diet from the cake boss to the Beyonce to the cabbage soup to the egg diet. But it depends on your body. Like, what works for you doesn't work for me," Collins reflected, emphasizing the highly individual nature of weight loss success and the frustration of trying multiple methods without lasting results.

Finding Acceptance Beyond Medication

Despite the setback with Ozempic, Collins expressed gratitude for having supportive relationships in her life. "But fortunately, you know, I am with someone that loves me exactly as I am. He knew me years ago, he knows me today, two pounds up, two pounds down," she shared, highlighting the importance of acceptance and unconditional love regardless of weight fluctuations.

Her story serves as both a testament to the powerful effects of weight-loss medications like Ozempic and a cautionary tale about their potential risks, particularly when dosages are increased. Collins' experience underscores the complex balance between seeking medical solutions for weight management and acknowledging the limitations and dangers that can accompany them.
