Holland & Barrett Launches Free Monthly Wellness Check-Ins Nationwide
Free Wellness Check-Ins Launch at Holland & Barrett Stores

In a significant move to address the UK's health challenges, Holland and Barrett has announced a major new initiative that will see all of its stores across the country offer free Wellness Check-Ins to customers every month. This development comes as a response to a recent national health study revealing a concerning gap between public health awareness and proactive management.

A Proactive Approach to Health

The retailer's Back Your Body campaign will provide 300,000 free in-store Wellness Check-Ins monthly, available nationwide. Appointments, which last approximately 15 minutes, can be booked either online or directly in-store. This initiative represents a strategic shift from what the company describes as moving the UK from 'reactive repair to proactive health' management.

Addressing the Health Awareness Gap

The decision follows compelling research findings that while 74% of Britons acknowledge that establishing good health habits now is crucial for preventing future illness, only 50% actively manage their health. This disparity highlights a significant opportunity for intervention and support.

A Holland and Barrett spokesperson explained that the Wellness Check-Ins will deliver science-backed, personalised advice to help individuals better understand their bodies. The sessions are specifically designed to "cut through complex information and wellness misinformation, turning it into simple, actionable steps" for participants.

Targeting Younger Demographics

Particularly aimed at those under 40 who are not eligible for the NHS 40+ Health Check, these appointments seek to help younger adults "take control of their health earlier." To facilitate this service, Holland and Barrett has enrolled up to 4,500 trained 'Wellness Champions' who will conduct the appointments with customers.

While the in-store Wellness Check-Ins represent a new offering, the retailer already provides free online appointments. Their website clarifies that "our advisors are trained and certified to provide advice and are able to make personalised product recommendations. Our training has been verified by external and internal scientific experts and medical practitioners."

The UK's Health Landscape

A new national health report cited by the company suggests that access to healthcare—and consequently preventative health measures—is increasingly becoming a 'postcode lottery' across the United Kingdom. The statistics reveal stark regional disparities in health access and outcomes.

  • While 56% of Londoners find it easy to access healthcare, this drops to just 34% in Northern Ireland and 39% in the East Midlands and South East.
  • 83% of Welsh residents say they only visit doctors when absolutely necessary, compared to 71% in London.
  • Health pressures are particularly concentrated in the North East, Yorkshire and Humber, where over one-third describe their health as fair or poor.

Expert Perspectives on Preventative Health

Dr. Carrie Ruxton, an award-winning dietitian and contributor to the health report, commented: "The UK is living longer but not always living well, with a growing burden of preventable disease and health outcomes that lag behind comparable nations. This situation is detrimental for individuals, the workforce, and the NHS."

Dr. Ruxton further emphasized that "proactive health habits formed in early adulthood can shape long-term health outcomes and positively impact the future burden of chronic disease. However, without accessible, trusted and practical support, many people remain stuck in a cycle of reactive repair."

Comprehensive Health Coverage

The Wellness Check-Ins can cover numerous health aspects including nutrition, weight management, joint health, bone density, muscle function, energy levels, women's health, and various other wellness concerns. This comprehensive approach aims to address multiple facets of individual health in a single, accessible session.

Leadership Vision for Community Health

Anthony Houghton, Group CEO at Holland and Barrett, articulated the company's vision: "We recognise the UK faces a growing health paradox, but Britain isn't lacking motivation—it's lacking momentum. The risk is becoming a nation that waits until something goes wrong. To make prevention work, support must be embedded in places people already go, before they become patients—and that infrastructure already exists on the high street."

Houghton continued: "This means recognising the role of trusted, community-based support alongside formal healthcare. As the UK's leading health and wellness retailer, we're well placed on the high street and online to help the nation back their bodies and make preventative health a reality for all."

Reflecting on his personal experience, Houghton added: "Throughout my career, I've learned many lessons along the way, one of the most important being that if I look after my body now, it'll stay well for longer. I'm a firm believer in prehab over rehab, but the overload of health and wellness information can be overwhelming."

Endorsement from Sporting Excellence

Double World Heptathlon Champion and Olympic silver medalist Katarina Johnson-Thompson endorsed the initiative, stating: "Holland and Barrett's new Wellness Check-Ins are a great place to start with advice you can trust." This endorsement from a top athlete underscores the program's credibility and potential impact on public health engagement.

This nationwide rollout represents a significant investment in community health infrastructure, positioning Holland and Barrett as not just a retailer but a proactive participant in the UK's health ecosystem. By leveraging their physical presence across the country, the company aims to bridge the gap between health awareness and actionable health management for thousands of Britons each month.
