First Dates Star Opens Up About Cystic Fibrosis on Channel 4 Return
The popular dating programme First Dates makes its highly anticipated return to Channel 4 tonight, featuring hopeful singles in search of romance. Among them is a participant who bravely discusses her lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis, a condition that once led doctors to predict she would not survive beyond the age of 16.
Nicole's Journey with a Degenerative Condition
During the episode, 27-year-old Nicole from East Sussex pauses her date with 24-year-old Matthew to take medication, revealing her diagnosis. "I actually have cystic fibrosis. It's a lifelong condition, you're born with it, there's no cure," she explains. Nicole describes how she was healthy until age seven, then suffered a persistent chest infection for three years, requiring hospital admissions every three months.
Characterising it as an "isolating condition," Nicole details consuming 30 tablets daily and living with constant anxiety about falling ill. She shares with producers that her parents were told she would only live until 16, a prognosis she mentally blocked out as a coping mechanism.
A Turning Point in Treatment and Hope for the Future
In a positive development, Nicole highlights a significant medical advancement. "In 2020, this brand new modulator therapy came about, and it was a big turning point for me. Touch wood, I have been pretty well ever since," she says. This improvement has allowed her to plan for the future, noting she started paying into a pension last year.
First Dates Returns with New Series and Diverse Participants
The BAFTA-winning show resumes tonight at 10pm, set in an upmarket restaurant in Bath, overseen by French maître d' Fred Sirieix and his team. The series promises:
- Awkward encounters and flourishing romantic connections
- A yoga teacher meeting a mindfulness coach
- A former Lioness turned firefighter, Abbie, who becomes emotional discussing her career-ending injury
- A doctor facing her nerves with a self-confessed geek
Since its premiere in 2013, First Dates has garnered a massive following for its authentic portrayal of dating experiences. Tonight's episode continues this tradition, blending heartfelt personal stories with the quest for love.
