The family of a 14-month-old girl from Scotland has spoken out about the immense challenges they have faced while seeking a diagnosis for their daughter's mysterious and debilitating illness. Yasmin Whittington, 30, from Brechin in Angus, has had to abandon her career to provide full-time care for her daughter Elyza, who began exhibiting alarming symptoms when she was just two months old.
Elyza's Symptoms and Medical Journey
Elyza's condition includes persistent vomiting, severe feeding difficulties, extremely low muscle tone, and chronic fatigue that causes her to sleep up to 21 hours each day. Her development has been significantly delayed, with current milestones comparable to those of a five or six-month-old infant. She cannot feed orally and relies entirely on a feeding tube, while struggling to maintain a healthy weight.
Over the past year, Elyza has spent more than three months in hospital undergoing numerous tests, yet medical professionals remain unable to identify the underlying cause of her symptoms. Initially, doctors suspected a condition known as "floppy infant syndrome," but they believe there must be a more fundamental issue at play. The family now faces the possibility that Elyza may require a feeding tube directly connected to her stomach due to serious gastrointestinal complications.

Yasmin Whittington lives with her husband Charles, 31, and their three other children: Isaac, seven; Alfie, five; and Isla, two. She describes how her role has dramatically shifted from mother to nurse, requiring her to master complex medical care routines. They supplied a specialized car seat designed to support Elyza's low muscle tone, organizing its delivery within two weeks. In gratitude, Yasmin has committed to participating in Glasgow's Kiltwalk challenge to raise funds for the charity. She will be joined by friends Zoe McCormack, 30, and Rohana Dewfall, 29, with plans to continue fundraising during the Dundee Kiltwalk later this year. Yasmin selected the walking event because it accommodates her limited training time while caring for Elyza, and she believes the physical activity will benefit her mental health during this stressful period.
