A devoted couple who were married for 63 years have died within hours of each other, with their son saying their deaths resembled the plot of the film The Notebook. John and Pam Northern, both 81, were found huddled together at their home in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, on December 20.
Their son Alan, 44, of Derby, said: “They lived their lives entwined together and now they are at peace together. I know they wouldn’t have wanted to be apart. It was devastating to lose them both but they are together for ever.”
The couple fell in love after meeting at a shoe factory where they worked as teenagers in 1960. They married the following year and moved from Leicester to Lincolnshire in 1976 with Alan, their only child.
Mr Northern is believed to have died from pneumonia while his wife died of bowel cancer. Their bodies were discovered after a neighbour spotted them through a window.
Alan added: “My fondest memories of them are of the love and support they gave me when I was growing up. My parents were the most selfless people you could ever meet.” A joint funeral for John and Pam will be held on Tuesday, January 17.
