Devon Family's Double Tragedy: Parents Die Days Apart, Leaving Daughters Bereft
Devon Parents Die Days Apart in Heartbreaking Double Tragedy

Devon Family Shattered by Consecutive Losses of Beloved Parents

A close-knit family from Devon has been left utterly heartbroken following the devastating deaths of both parents within a matter of weeks. Gary and Heidi Veacock, residents of the coastal town of Exmouth, passed away just days apart, leaving their two daughters, Amber and Mia, to navigate an unimaginable double loss.

Tributes Flow for 'Larger Than Life' Father and Talented Mother

Loved ones have remembered the couple as exceptional individuals and devoted parents. Gary Veacock, a recently retired Royal Marine officer, died unexpectedly on January 12 due to complications from undiagnosed high blood pressure. His funeral was conducted with full military honours at Lympstone Training Camp in Devon.

In a moving tribute, daughter Amber Veacock described her father as "truly larger than life - full of love, laughter, and warmth." She added, "He was an incredible husband and an amazing dad, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Our hearts are broken."

Tragically, just two weeks after her husband's funeral, Heidi Veacock also passed away. She had been courageously battling neuroendocrine cancer and carcinoid disease for an extended period. Amber fondly recalled her mother as a gifted pastry chef whose vibrant personality brought joy to every room she entered.

Community Rallies with Overwhelming Support

In the wake of this profound family tragedy, friends and community members have launched an online fundraising campaign to support Amber and Mia during this exceptionally difficult period. The fundraiser has already garnered remarkable support, raising more than £35,000 to help the sisters with funeral arrangements and provide them with some financial flexibility as they process their grief.

The fundraising page poignantly noted, "Sadness poured from dark, clouded skies following Gary’s passing. Then, on the first day of spring, Heidi also sadly passed away. After they were reunited, the birds sang and the sun broke through. Their love and kindness live on through their wonderful daughters."

Legacy of Service and Community Contribution

Gary Veacock's impact extended beyond his family. He was a former player for Topsham Town FC, with the club expressing sadness at his "unexpected passing." Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in organizing a charity abseil event for the Royal Free Charity, demonstrating his commitment to giving back.

The Royal Free Charity acknowledged his significant contribution, stating, "Gary was instrumental in launching our inaugural abseil last summer, bringing his leadership and experience as a Royal Marines officer to create an event that raised vital funds." Notably, he established the fundraiser to express gratitude for the NHS care his wife Heidi received during her illness.

As the Veacock family and their community mourn this immense loss, the daughters have requested no flowers. Instead, they welcome continued support through donations, allowing them to honor their parents' memory in a manner that reflects the couple's enduring spirit of kindness and community.
