Daniel Neeson Opens Up About Heart Surgery and Rare Congenital Condition
Daniel Neeson, the 29-year-old son of acclaimed actor Liam Neeson and the late Natasha Richardson, has publicly shared a significant health update following recent surgery. In a heartfelt Instagram post, he revealed his diagnosis of a Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV), a congenital heart defect that affects approximately two percent of the population.
Understanding the Bicuspid Aortic Valve Condition
In his detailed caption, Daniel Neeson explained that BAV is a condition where the aortic valve has two leaflets instead of the normal three. "About 2 percent of the human population has it, and most people don't even know," he wrote. The condition can remain dormant for years before potentially causing valve failure or enlargement of the aorta. For Neeson, regular monitoring detected severe left ventricle dilation and aortic enlargement, prompting the decision for surgical intervention.
"Some people with BAV are operated on later in life, but I drew the early-bird straw," he noted, emphasizing the importance of proactive health management. His post included several photos from his hospital stay, showing him both before and after the procedure.
A Message of Gratitude and Empowerment
Daniel expressed profound gratitude to his medical team, specifically thanking Dr. Leonard Girardi and the staff at Weill Cornell / NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He described the ICU team and nurses as "truly some of the greatest people on the planet" and credited his fiancée, Natalie Ackerman, as his unwavering "rock" throughout the experience.
His caption carried an empowering message about health awareness: "Nothing is more empowering than understanding your health, staying on top of your game, and planning ahead. Health is about being proactive, not reactive." He reflected on the surreal realization that "one of your biggest challenges was quietly developing inside you your entire life."
Encouraging Proactive Heart Health Checks
Beyond his personal story, Daniel Neeson urged others to prioritize cardiac health. He recommended that everyone, regardless of known heart issues, should have their heart checked by a cardiologist. His concluding advice was philosophical yet practical: "Most importantly, surrender to the present moment. Don't live in fear. The universe has your back when you learn to dance with it."
While his father Liam Neeson and older brother Micheál, 30, have pursued acting careers, Daniel has charted a different path. He co-founded the sustainable tequila brand De Nada Tequila in 2021 with business partner Adam Millman, a venture inspired by his mother's love of margaritas. The Independent has reached out to representatives for Liam Neeson regarding his son's health update.
