Tragic Dad's Final Act: Heartbroken Father's Desperate 999 Call After Fatal BBQ Blaze That Killed Family
Dad's final 999 call after fatal barbecue blaze tragedy

A heartbroken father’s final, desperate act was to call 999 from his hospital bed to report the horrific barbecue accident that would ultimately claim his life, an inquest has heard.

Paul McKechnie, 52, suffered catastrophic burns after using a flammable liquid to ignite a charcoal barbecue in his garden in Wigan, Greater Manchester. The devoted dad was airlifted to hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries just days later.

A Desperate Plead for Help

In a poignant detail revealed at Bolton Coroner's Court, Mr. McKechnie himself made the initial emergency call. Despite his severe injuries, he managed to calmly inform the operator, "I have set myself on fire with petrol on a barbecue." This brave act set in motion the emergency response.

His daughter, who witnessed the terrifying incident on June 9th, provided a harrowing testimony. She described the moment the flames "engulfed his body in a ball of fire" after he poured petrol onto the coals, unaware a dangerous vapour cloud had formed.

A Life Cut Short

Paul, described as a hands-on and loving father, was rushed to Whiston Hospital's specialist burns unit before being transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he passed away on June 13th from multiple organ failure caused by his extensive injuries.

Area Coroner Professor Alan Walsh recorded a conclusion of misadventure. He emphasised the hidden dangers of using accelerants like petrol on barbecues, a common but deadly mistake. "It is so important that people realise the dangers of using any form of flammable liquid," Prof. Walsh stated, hoping to prevent future tragedies.

The inquest heard that Paul, an experienced tradesman, was likely unaware of the invisible vapours that can travel and ignite explosively. His family is now left to mourn a man remembered for his unwavering love and dedication.
