Former Coronation Street star Tracy Shaw has shown off her new wig as she prepares to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. The actress, 52, best known for playing Maxine Peacock on the iconic soap, has been keeping her fans updated throughout her journey.
Wig Preparation and Macmillan Support
On Tuesday evening, Tracy shared new photos on Instagram sporting a short blonde wig. She wrote: "Prep before chemo…things I’ve learnt from the wonderful McMillan team who help in all areas of our lives . THANKYOU." The star also asked her followers for advice on wearing a wig, especially during extreme weather, adding: "I’m still unsure whether I’ll be too hot? What do you think?"
Outpouring of Support from Fans
Tracy was flooded with supportive messages. One fan commented: "Good luck [fingers crossed emoji] the wig really suits you Tracy .. all the best you’ve got this." Another wrote: "Whether you wear a wig or not you will still look lovely. I’m glad that you had a lovely day and the sun was still shining. I hope that you managed a coffee/cuppa when you were out. Taking precious time out for you is important. Love and hugs from Northern Ireland."
Previous Hair Donation to Little Princess Trust
Last week, Tracy revealed she had cut her long blonde locks short and donated them to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides free wigs to children and young people who have lost their hair through illness. She posted: "Hair will donated to little princess trust. Another step on this breast cancer journey. Goodbye for now crazy hair. Before chemo takes you away completely, I will enjoy what’s left for now." In a video, she was seen having her curly hair plaited and wiped away tears as she held the plaits.
Facing Treatment One Step at a Time
Tracy, who also had a brief pop career with a cover of Lonnie Gordon's "Happenin' All Over Again" and appeared in Casualty, Doctors, and Mile High, said she is taking her illness one step at a time. She explained: "I had some great guidance which is 'Don't look up, just keep going to the next base camp, don't climb Mt Everest, just keep taking one base camp at a time.' So today, I'll be going into the hospital and I'll be seeing my wonderful oncologist, and some other wonderful women on this journey with me, and I will face the next base camp."
Support from Co-Stars
When Tracy broke the news a month ago, several former co-stars offered their support. Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria Connor, said: "Sending love to you Tracy." Sally Ann Matthews, who portrayed Jenny Bradley, wrote: "Love you baby girl x."
According to the NHS, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the UK. Main treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted medicines. Advice and support are available at Breast Cancer Support.
