Boots Introduces Exercise-Linked Discounts on Weight Loss Medications
In a novel initiative to promote sustainable weight management, Boots pharmacy has announced a significant discount scheme for patients using weight loss jabs. The high street retailer, in partnership with health insurance firm Vitality, will offer up to a 25 per cent reduction on medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy for individuals who demonstrate a commitment to physical activity.
How the Discount Scheme Operates
Under this programme, patients can qualify for discounts by engaging in regular exercise, such as attending the gym or jogging approximately 3.1 miles (5km) per week. The scheme is designed to incentivise long-term lifestyle changes, aiming to help obese patients maintain weight loss and prevent regain. Members of Vitality, accessible through private health insurance or workplace schemes, will accumulate points based on their healthy behaviours.
These points are earned through activities like gym visits, step counts, and NHS health check-ups, as reported by The Times. The more points a patient collects, the higher the discount they receive, with the maximum being 25 per cent off weight-loss jabs purchased via the Boots Online Doctor service. This could translate to annual savings of around £1,000, considering that the highest dose of Mounjaro costs approximately £335 per month.
Background and Expert Insights
This initiative comes at a time when approximately 2 million people in the UK are using weight loss jabs. However, recent research highlights the challenges of maintaining weight loss after discontinuing these medications. A study from the University of Oxford found that while individuals on drugs like Mounjaro and Wegovy lose weight during treatment, they often regain it within 20 months of stopping—a rate four times faster than traditional dieters.
Experts emphasise the need for robust support to sustain progress through lifestyle modifications. Dr Katie Tryon, deputy chief executive for Vitality Health, explained that exercise enhances the benefits of weight loss medication by preventing muscle loss and improving cardiovascular function. She noted, “We’ve got lots of evidence to show that if you start losing weight, it becomes easier to exercise. There is this wonderful flywheel effect.”
Expansion of Boots' Services
Boots recently launched the first high street service for weight loss jabs last month across 17 stores, marking a shift from primarily online consultations to in-person assessments. Patients will now have consultations in private rooms where their medical history, weight, and height are evaluated to determine eligibility. These jabs, which mimic hormones regulating appetite and digestion, require a prescription from a qualified healthcare professional and cannot be purchased over the counter.
The in-store service offers the same treatments and pricing as the Boots Online Doctor service, with Wegovy starting at £99.97 for the lowest dose and Mounjaro at £176.97. Boots has been selling Wegovy, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, for three years and also provides Mounjaro, which is available on the NHS. This new scheme underscores a growing trend towards integrated health solutions that combine medication with lifestyle support for better long-term outcomes.
