A popular baby travel crib sold in the United Kingdom has been urgently recalled after government safety officials identified a 'serious risk' of suffocation and injury. The product, known as The New Mummy Crib Backpack, was marketed as a fold-out travel cot that doubles as a backpack and was available through major online retailers including Amazon, eBay, Fruugo, Joom, and DH Gate.
Safety Warning Issued by OPSS
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), a division of the UK government, issued the safety warning and confirmed that the crib had been rejected at the UK border. According to the OPSS report, the product is 'not structurally stable' and lacks warnings to indicate that it cannot be used overnight. The report further explains that a baby's 'natural movements' could cause the crib to collapse or tilt sideways if left unattended overnight, potentially leading to 'serious injuries'.
Additional Suffocation Risk
The crib is supplied with a cover that would fully enclose and cover the baby, creating a suffocation hazard. The OPSS noted that this design flaw means the product does not meet the requirements outlined in the 2005 General Product Safety Regulations. Parents who have purchased the item are advised to stop using it immediately and return it to the retailer for a full refund.
The recall applies to all units sold in the UK, and the product has been removed from sale across all platforms. The New Mummy Crib Backpack was advertised as having 'multiple compartments' and was intended for use as a portable sleeping solution for babies on the go. However, the safety risks have led to its withdrawal from the market.
