Amy Dowden, the 35-year-old professional dancer from Strictly Come Dancing, has been inundated with messages of support after sharing an emotional update marking three years since her mastectomy. The dancer, who is currently in remission from stage three breast cancer, reflected on her journey in a heartfelt Instagram post on Monday.
Amy was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer shortly after returning from her honeymoon in 2023. She underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and fertility treatment before announcing she was cancer-free. In her post, she wrote: "Three years ago today, I had just had my breast removed and was currently undergoing fertility treatment before starting chemotherapy."
Fear of Early Menopause
Amy explained that one of her biggest fears at the time was that her hormone-fed cancer would trigger an early menopause. She said: "I was terrified, not only of the treatment itself, but of being thrown into a forced menopause because my cancer was hormone-fed." Despite the fear, she has now adopted a completely changed outlook on life.
She wrote: "Fast forward exactly three years, and my perspective on life has completely changed. I live each day to the fullest, with so much gratitude for the little things I once took for granted." Amy added: "I know how lucky I am, and I never lose sight of that. Every day is a gift, and I'm determined to make the most of it." She ended her message with: "Here's to resilience, hope, and celebrating every milestone."
Overwhelming Support from Fans
The dancer was flooded with support from her 720,000 followers. One fan wrote: "You are incredible Amy and a lovely human being." Another said: "You are amazing lovely." A third added: "So proud of you." Amy has been confirmed to return as a professional dancer on Strictly 2026.
Alongside her cancer advocacy, Amy has continued to campaign for greater awareness of Crohn's disease, which she has lived with since childhood. She also encourages people to regularly check themselves for signs of breast cancer.
