Amanda Peet Provides Hopeful Update Amid Breast Cancer Journey

Amanda Peet, the acclaimed actress known for roles in Something's Gotta Give and Game of Thrones-related projects, has offered a positive update regarding her health battle after publicly revealing her breast cancer diagnosis earlier this month. The 54-year-old star appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Tuesday, where she shared insights into her current condition and the wisdom she has gained through this challenging experience.

Public Revelation and Personal Struggles

Peet first disclosed her diagnosis in a candid essay published in The New Yorker on March 21, detailing that she was diagnosed with Stage 1, hormone-receptor-positive (HR+), HER2-negative breast cancer last year. This revelation came during an exceptionally difficult period, as both of her parents were simultaneously on hospice care, though on opposite coasts. Her father passed away shortly after entering hospice, adding to the emotional weight of her situation.

During the television interview, host Andy Cohen read a fan question asking, 'How are you doing since the diagnosis and what is the piece of advice you've gotten from someone as you're dealing with this?' Peet responded with optimism, stating, 'I'm doing great.' She then shared the best advice she has received: 'Enjoy it while we're here.' Cohen echoed this sentiment, remarking, 'That is something to live by every day.'

The Diagnosis Process and Emotional Rollercoaster

In her essay, Peet recounted the events leading to her diagnosis. She explained that she had long been aware of having 'dense' and 'busy' breasts, which necessitated extra monitoring, including checkups with a breast surgeon every six months. Shortly before Labor Day last year, she went for what she believed would be a routine scan. However, her doctor ordered a biopsy after noticing something concerning on the ultrasound.

Peet described the moment she sensed something was amiss: 'After the procedure, she said that she would walk the sample over to Cedars-Sinai and hand-deliver it to Pathology. That's when I knew.' The following day, she learned the tumor appeared small but required an MRI to determine 'the extent of disease.' Upon receiving her Stage 1 diagnosis, Peet experienced a brief moment of relief, noting, 'I was happier than I'd been pre-diagnosis, when I was just a regular person who didn't have cancer.' Yet, anxiety quickly resurfaced as she awaited further tests, writing, 'But after about 10 minutes, I remembered that I still needed the MRI and regressed to baseline terror.'

Family Dynamics and Personal Choices

The timing of her diagnosis coincided with profound family challenges. While dealing with her own health news, Peet's mother was in the final stages of Parkinson's disease in Los Angeles. The actress made the difficult decision not to inform her mother about either her cancer diagnosis or her father's passing. She reflected on a poignant moment sitting by her mother's bedside, unsure if her mother recognized her, and chose to communicate without words, feeling that 'time was running out' and she had already shared everything important.

Support from Family and Career Continuation

Peet, who married Game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff in 2006, is a mother to three children: Frances, 19, Molly, 16, and Henry, 11. She praised her children's handling of her diagnosis, telling E! News, 'They've been great.' She emphasized the importance of preparing herself before involving them, acknowledging, 'The hard part was realizing that nothing is certain and there was going to be no perfect time to tell them.'

Despite her health battle, Peet continues to pursue her acting career. She recently took on the role of Mel Cooper in the Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors, with the second season scheduled to premiere on April 3. With a career spanning decades since her film debut in Animal Room (1995), Peet has starred in numerous films and TV shows, including The Whole Nine Yards, Seinfeld, and The Good Wife.

Through her openness, Amanda Peet not only sheds light on her personal journey with breast cancer but also inspires others with her resilience and positive outlook, reminding everyone to cherish each moment.
