Alex Kingston's Uterine Cancer Battle: A Stark Warning Against Ignoring Symptoms

Renowned actress Alex Kingston has issued a poignant health warning after revealing she almost missed the critical signs of uterine cancer, mistakenly attributing symptoms like bloating and weight gain to the natural ageing process. The 62-year-old star was diagnosed with the disease in May last year, undergoing a hysterectomy and radiation therapy as part of her treatment.

Misreading the Body's Signals

In a candid interview for the April issue of Prima magazine, Alex Kingston recounted how she failed to recognise the alarming signals her body was sending. She explained that, as a naturally positive person, she dismissed the symptoms, thinking they were merely part of turning 60. "I thought that all the things such as the bloating and weight gain, or injuries not healing properly, were because of my age," she said. "I thought, 'This is what it’s like to be in your 60s, and it’s just part and parcel of getting older.'"

It was only during a performance in the play The Other Boleyn Girl at a West Sussex theatre in April and May last year that a severe haemorrhage on stage forced her to acknowledge something was seriously wrong. Even then, Alex initially suspected a burst fibroid, never considering cancer until medical tests confirmed the diagnosis. Doctors discovered cancer in her fallopian tubes, fortunately noting it had not spread to her ovaries.

Survivor's Journey and Advocacy

After overcoming the disease, Alex Kingston embraced life with renewed vigour, signing up for Strictly Come Dancing, where she was partnered with Johannes Radebe. She described the cancer battle as taking up a "huge part" of her life but now feels like "Superwoman." By continuing her journey on the show, she aimed to demonstrate that it is possible to move forward despite significant challenges.

Speaking to The Mirror, she encouraged others facing difficulties to live fully, emphasising the importance of seizing every moment. "Take every moment and enjoy it because life only gives us one shot," she urged, highlighting her commitment to raising awareness about uterine cancer, which she noted often lacks public attention.

Reflections on Recovery and Resilience

Alex was voted off Strictly Come Dancing in November after a dance-off against EastEnders star Balvinder Sopal and Julian Callion. Despite the elimination, she expressed immense pride in her journey, telling presenter Tess Daly, "I had never in my wildest dreams imagined that I would last this long. It's been just the most incredible journey for me." She also praised her professional partner Johannes, affirming their lasting friendship.

Her story serves as a critical reminder of the importance of listening to one's body and seeking medical advice promptly, rather than dismissing symptoms as mere signs of ageing. The April 2026 issue of Prima, featuring her full interview, is now available for sale.
