The research indicates that AI-generated meal plans frequently underestimate total energy intake by an amount equivalent to skipping an entire meal, raising significant health concerns for adolescents worldwide.

Across the globe, teenagers are increasingly turning to AI chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and other popular platforms to receive personalised nutrition guidance and create structured meal plans, particularly for weight management purposes. This growing reliance on artificial intelligence for dietary planning has prompted researchers to examine the potential consequences of this technological approach to adolescent nutrition.

Study Methodology and Alarming Findings

The comprehensive study, published in the respected journal Frontiers in Nutrition, utilised five different AI models including ChatGPT 4, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Perplexity, Bing Chat-5GPT, and Claude 4.1 to create three-day meal plans for four distinct 15-year-old profiles. These included both male and female teenagers in overweight and obese percentiles, with the AI instructed to design plans covering three meals and two snacks daily.

When researchers compared these AI-generated plans to those created by a qualified dietitian specialising in adolescent health, they discovered startling discrepancies. The AI models consistently calculated energy requirements approximately 700 calories lower than the professional dietitian, a substantial difference that researchers warn could have serious clinical implications for growing teenagers.

Nutritional Imbalances and Macronutrient Concerns

Beyond the significant calorie deficit, the study revealed troubling imbalances in macronutrient distribution within AI-generated plans. According to lead researcher Dr. Ayşe Betül Bilen, "AI-generated diet plans consistently deviated from the recommended macronutrient balance, which is particularly problematic for adolescents."

The analysis showed that while AI models recommended approximately 20 grams more protein than the dietitian's plans, they substantially underestimated carbohydrate intake by an average of 115 grams. This resulted in carbohydrates providing only 32-36 percent of total energy in AI plans, compared to the recommended 45-50 percent for adolescent nutrition.

Critical Developmental Period at Risk

Adolescence represents a crucial phase for physical growth, bone development, and cognitive maturation, making proper nutrition particularly vital during these formative years. Dr. Bilen emphasised that "following such unbalanced or overly restrictive meal plans during the teenage years may negatively affect growth, metabolic health, and eating behaviours."

The combination of reduced energy and carbohydrate intake alongside increased protein and fat ratios could potentially disrupt normal adolescent development and create long-term health consequences. Researchers speculate that AI models may be relying on generalised or popular diet patterns rather than fully integrating age-specific nutritional requirements.

Raising Awareness and Promoting Professional Guidance

Scientists behind the study hope their findings will increase public awareness about the limitations of current AI technology in creating balanced, developmentally appropriate meal plans for teenagers. They stress that while AI tools can provide general information, they should not replace professional nutritional guidance during critical growth periods.

The research team recommends that teenagers and their families consult qualified dietitians or healthcare providers for personalised nutrition advice rather than relying exclusively on AI-generated meal plans. This precautionary approach could help prevent potential nutritional deficiencies and support healthy adolescent development.
