Adam Thomas Shares Inspirational Health Update on Psoriatic Arthritis Battle
Emmerdale and Waterloo Road star Adam Thomas has provided an inspirational update on his health journey after being diagnosed with the painful autoimmune condition psoriatic arthritis in 2023. The 37-year-old actor, known for his role in the popular soap opera, has been openly sharing details of his debilitating condition with his 1.2 million Instagram followers.
Living with Psoriatic Arthritis
Adam Thomas explained that psoriatic arthritis is an autoimmune disease where his immune system attacks his own body, leading to significant pain, swelling, and stiffness in his joints. "It causes a s**t-load of pain," he candidly told fans, describing how symptoms vary daily—sometimes affecting just his fingers and knees, while other days causing widespread pain throughout his body.
The actor revealed that he must inject himself with medication every two weeks to manage the pain, a process he recently attempted independently for the first time. In a video shared on social media, he said, "Today is a very big day people, because today I’m going to try and attempt to do my injections on my own for the very first time." After completing the injection, he concluded, "It wasn’t so bad after all," showcasing his resilience.
Support from Fans and Healthcare Professionals
Fans and celebrities quickly responded with messages of support. Television presenter Carol Vorderman related to his experience, commenting, "I’m on this every fortnight Adam …. You have to press hard with the pen!!! Love ya." A paediatric rheumatology nurse praised the video as "inspirational for our young patients" and noted it would be helpful for those starting similar treatments.
Another follower affected by an invisible illness shared, "Needed this today after a rough 5 days stuck on my sofa with my invisible illness. Well done on doing your own injection, it’s a bigger thing than people realise." Adam has spoken about the mental health challenges of living with the condition, admitting he sometimes spends days "smiling through the pain, pretending everything is okay when it’s not."
Wife Caroline's Unwavering Support
Adam Thomas highlighted the crucial role his wife Caroline has played in his health journey. In a heartfelt post earlier in February, he thanked her for her support, sharing photos of her administering his injections. He wrote, "Shoutout to my wife Caroline, genuinely the best mother, the best wife, NURSE and somehow still my best friend after 18 years together!"
He detailed how she has assisted with meal preps, medication management, and emotional support, adding, "We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve argued (obviously), but I wouldn’t change a single bit of it." The couple, who met in 2007 and married in 2017, share two children, Teddy and Elsie-Rose, and Adam expressed his gratitude for her unwavering presence.
Adam's openness about his condition has not only raised awareness but also provided comfort to others facing similar health battles, making his updates a source of inspiration and solidarity in the community.
