Woman's Hormonal Symptom Assumption Leads to Shocking Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Evelina Rydzanicz, a 31-year-old finance professional from Reading, Berkshire, experienced what she believed was routine hormonal soreness before receiving a devastating breast cancer diagnosis that completely upended her life. The young woman discovered the discomfort while showering, initially dismissing it as a minor hormonal issue rather than considering the possibility of cancer screening at her age.

From Routine Concern to Life-Altering Diagnosis

When Evelina contacted her general practitioner about the persistent soreness on the left side of her chest, the medical professional did not appear excessively concerned and offered an appointment scheduled for four weeks later. Unwilling to wait that long with her growing unease, Evelina made the decision to seek private medical care instead, securing an immediate appointment at The Chiltern Hospital in Buckinghamshire.

"I was completely shocked when they told me they suspected breast cancer," Evelina recalled. "I really thought it was something hormonal - I didn't think cancer screening was even on the cards at my age. I was 30 at the time and you just don't expect it at that age."

Following comprehensive testing including an ultrasound and biopsy at the breast clinic, consultants delivered the suspected diagnosis of breast cancer. On May 9, 2025, the biopsy results confirmed their suspicions, revealing stage two, grade two, triple-positive breast cancer that would require aggressive treatment.

Intensive Treatment Journey and Emotional Toll

The diagnosis forced Evelina to put her life on immediate hold, including postponing career advancement plans she had been considering. "Life had to be put on pause. It had to stop. I couldn't work for six months," she explained. "It was earth-shattering, but I'm slowly coming back now."

Her treatment regimen, which began on July 7, 2025, included:

  • Eighteen weeks of intensive chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy sessions
  • Phesgo targeted therapy injections
  • A lumpectomy procedure to remove cancerous tissue

The emotional impact of chemotherapy proved particularly challenging for the young professional. "I had prepared myself for that possibility, but when they told me I would need chemotherapy, that's when I broke down again," she admitted. "I thought 'oh my god, I'm going to lose my hair' and while I did use a cold cap the whole way through, I lost most of my hair."

Evelina described how the visible hair loss served as a constant reminder of her illness, making her condition apparent to others even when she was trying to maintain strength and normalcy for loved ones.

Triumphant Recovery and Celebration of Life

Near the conclusion of her chemotherapy treatment, an MRI scan delivered encouraging news that the cancer had responded completely to the aggressive treatment protocol. On November 20, 2025, Evelina underwent her lumpectomy procedure, and days later received the life-affirming confirmation that she was officially cancer-free.

"I told my partner in the car that I would cry no matter what the result was - all the emotion had built up," Evelina shared about the moment she received her results. "When the surgeon said there was nothing there, I started crying, but I was also smiling wider than I ever have in my life. I even hugged the surgeon. It didn't feel real, but for completely different reasons than the diagnosis. I was overwhelmed with joy."

Transforming Experience into Advocacy and Awareness

Now cancer-free and rebuilding her strength, Evelina has channeled her experience into positive action by participating in Breast Cancer Now's Hampton Court Palace Pink Ribbon Walk. The fundraising and awareness event represents both a personal victory and an opportunity to support others facing similar challenges.

"I saw this as a great opportunity to focus on my fitness," she explained about her motivation to participate. "I have a goal in mind to feel physically stronger. This is an opportunity to stay motivated and I've been calling it my victory walk. I'm really looking forward to being in the walk's atmosphere, to celebrate life with everyone. I think walking with everyone with our shared experience is such a demonstration of strength."

Evelina's journey from hormonal symptom assumption to cancer diagnosis, through intensive treatment, and ultimately to recovery and advocacy highlights the importance of timely medical attention regardless of age and the resilience possible even when facing earth-shattering health news.
