Health Expert Advocates 30p Tablet for Hay Fever Relief During High Pollen Alert

As the Met Office maintains a 'Very High' pollen alert across extensive regions of England and Wales, a prominent health specialist has endorsed an affordable over-the-counter medication to alleviate hay fever symptoms. Dr Ranj Singh, speaking on BBC's Morning Live, described the antihistamine fexofenadine as "very helpful" for many sufferers, with some retailers offering it at approximately 30p per pill.

Understanding Hay Fever and Its Impact

Hay fever, a prevalent allergic condition, triggers symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose. According to the NHS, it cannot be cured, but various measures and medications can manage the discomfort. Symptoms typically worsen from late March to September, especially during warm, humid, and windy conditions, and can persist for weeks or months, unlike common colds that usually resolve within one to two weeks.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sneezing and coughing
  • Itchy, red, or watery eyes
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Itchy throat, mouth, nose, and ears
  • Headaches and fatigue

Dr Ranj's Recommendation and Key Details

In a previous episode of Morning Live with hosts Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones, Dr Ranj highlighted fexofenadine as an effective option for allergy relief. He noted that this medication, previously available only by prescription, is now accessible over the counter. "Fexofenadine is usually available on prescription and now is available over the counter. It is very helpful for a lot of people," he stated.

However, Dr Ranj emphasized important precautions:

  1. It is suitable only for individuals aged six and over.
  2. Avoid consuming orange, apple, or grapefruit juice while taking it, as this can increase the risk of side effects like headaches, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, or dizziness.
  3. Those with liver, kidney, heart conditions, or epilepsy should not use it.

Availability and Cost Considerations

Fexofenadine is widely available in pharmacies and supermarkets. For instance, Boots sells a 30-pack of Fexofenadine Hydrochloride 120mg film-coated tablets for £8.99, equating to roughly 30p per tablet. The retailer claims that these tablets begin relieving symptoms within one hour and provide 24-hour coverage.

The NHS classifies fexofenadine as a non-drowsy antihistamine used to treat hay fever, conjunctivitis, eczema, hives, insect bite reactions, and some food allergies. It is less likely to cause sleepiness compared to other antihistamines. While 120mg tablets are available over the counter for adults and children aged 12 and over, 180mg tablets for hives and formulations for children under 12 require a prescription.

Side Effects and Safety Advice

Common side effects of fexofenadine include headaches, sleepiness, nausea, and dizziness. The NHS advises against driving, cycling, or operating machinery if experiencing drowsiness or dizziness. Additionally, it warns against drinking grapefruit, apple, or orange juice during treatment, as these can reduce the medication's effectiveness. Alcohol consumption is also discouraged due to potential increased sleepiness.

With pollen levels expected to remain high until the end of the week, affecting millions, Dr Ranj's recommendation offers a cost-effective solution for managing hay fever symptoms. As always, individuals should consult healthcare professionals before starting any new medication, especially if they have pre-existing health conditions or are taking other drugs.
