Six Injured in Merseyside Hospital Attack After Appointment Refusal
Six hurt in metal bar attack at Newton Community Hospital

A violent incident at a Merseyside hospital has left six people requiring medical treatment after a man, reportedly refused an appointment, launched an attack with a metal bar.

Details of the Hospital Assault

Merseyside Police were called to Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows shortly after midday on Tuesday, 30 December 2025. According to authorities, a man had become "increasingly agitated" after his request for a hospital appointment was denied. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in the individual damaging a reception counter before assaulting several people, believed to include hospital staff.

Officers confirmed that the assailant used a metal bar during the attack. The weapon was recovered at the scene for forensic examination. Following his arrest, a 20-year-old man from Newton-le-Willows, originally from Afghanistan, was taken to a local police station.

Injuries and Police Response

The force spokesman stated that six victims needed treatment for injuries sustained in the assault. The injuries included:

  • Head lacerations
  • Injuries to arms and hands
  • Bruising

All those injured were treated at the hospital and nearby walk-in centres and are now in a stable condition. The suspect was later detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.

Superintendent Sarah Rotherham addressed community concerns, stating: "We understand that this incident would have caused concern for the local community and I hope the public feel reassured by the increased police presence." A mobile police station was deployed to the site, and a scene remained in place at the community hospital on Wednesday.

Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

Local councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron, who represents the Newton-le-Willows ward, said his father, living next door to the hospital, heard the commotion as someone attacked staff and damaged the reception area. He praised the emergency response, saying: "I can only thank Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service for such a swift and efficient response, running into a scenario where danger is unknown."

He added a note of caution, reflecting the community's shock: "It's a shock, but as always, we need to await the full facts without speculation." The 20-year-old suspect remains in custody, arrested on suspicion of six counts of wounding, affray, and criminal damage. The investigation is ongoing.
