Prince Harry Opens Up on Past Struggles and Therapy in Emotional Melbourne Speech
Prince Harry visited the Whitten Oval in Melbourne on Wednesday, delivering a candid and emotional speech about his personal mental health journey. The Duke of Sussex spoke at an event for the men's health charity Movember, where he detailed the struggles he has faced and how therapy has been instrumental in helping him cope.
Addressing Past Demons and the Role of Therapy
During an on-stage conversation with Movember's global director of men's health research, Dr. Zac Seidler, Harry revealed that he knew he had "stuff from the past that I needed to deal with." He emphasized the dual role of therapy, stating, "For me, there's an element of choosing therapy because you have something or you think there's something that needs fixing. There's also the other piece of therapy, which is preventative and getting ahead of it. You don't have to wait until you're lying on the kitchen floor in the foetal position."
Parenting in the Age of Social Media
Harry also discussed how parenting dynamics have evolved with the rise of social media, a challenge his own parents did not face. He noted, "Obviously, 40 years ago, there wasn't social media. That's just one example of conversations that are now happening in households between kids and parents that never existed between me and my parents." He shared his perspective on fatherhood, explaining that he "felt a disconnection" early on and received advice from his therapist to be aware of his emotions after his child's birth.
Viewing Children as an Upgrade
The Duke elaborated on changing parental responsibilities, telling attendees, "From my perspective, our kids are our upgrade. That's not how I was taught, but that was my take on it - not to say I was an upgrade of my dad or that my kids are an upgrade of me. That's the approach that I take, to know that with the world the way that it goes, the kids that we bring up in today's world need to be an upgrade."
Movember's Mission and Impact
The Movember movement, founded in Melbourne in 2003, is a global charity focused on improving men's health, particularly in areas such as mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. The campaign involves men growing moustaches throughout November to raise awareness and has generated hundreds of millions of pounds across more than 20 countries. Since its inception, Movember has supported over 1,250 men's health projects worldwide.
Harry's Australian Visit Highlights
Harry's appearance at Movember followed a visit to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne on Tuesday, where he and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, met with patients and were greeted by enthusiastic crowds. The couple later visited the Australian National Veterans' Art Museum, participating in a pottery session with children of veterans. During his time at Whitten Oval, Harry also engaged with Western Bulldogs players, even kicking an Australian rules football, showcasing his involvement in the local community.
This speech marks another step in Harry's ongoing advocacy for mental health awareness, blending personal anecdotes with broader societal issues to encourage open conversations and proactive care.
