Matt Willis: Emma 'always worries' about him amid relapse fears

Busted band member Matt Willis has spoken frankly about the role his wife, Strictly Come Dancing host Emma Willis, plays in his sobriety, admitting she "always worries" about him as he addressed fears of a relapse.

Speaking on his mental health and addiction-centred podcast, On the Mend, Matt described his wife of 18 years as a "constant" presence and a continual reminder of what he'll "lose" should he relapse.

Emma's role in Matt's recovery

Matt said Emma has stood by him through "thick and thin". He revealed: "She makes sure that I'm on the straight and narrow, and she worries about me, and I don't resent her for that."

He continued by saying that, unavoidably, Emma will "always be worried" about him, though it remains his responsibility to "convince" her that he's fine.

Falling in love with Emma

In the particularly frank episode, Matt also admitted that the first time he ever fell in love was with Emma. He tied the knot with Emma in 2008, and the couple share three children: Isabelle, Ace and Trixie.

Matt admitted he initially misread his emotions, thinking it was just that he couldn't imagine life without her — before later recognising he'd fallen in love. He described how he came to comprehend what "that feeling was": "And it was shown to me, freely given, and it was amazing, but it was definitely much later in my life that I realised what that feeling was."

Life with Emma

While attempting to express his sentiments about his wife more fully, Matt stated: "I'm just not...there's certain things which I don't think I could ever, like, sum up in a paragraph, what she's meant to me and what the feelings I have for her [are] and our life."

"I don't think I could ever, ever do it justice. I don't know what my life would be without that feeling that I get, and wouldn't be worth living. I can't believe I'm 43, you know?"

He continued: "But I can't imagine being 43 without her, you know? Do you know what I mean? It's like, when I think of the last, like, since Isabelle was born, I feel like a different person back then.

"But I feel like I managed to do this incredible life with this woman who makes me better and also challenges me and holds me to account."
