Joe Swash Opens Up About ADHD Struggles and Management Journey
Joe Swash Shares ADHD Struggles and Management Plan

Joe Swash has shared an update with fans as he embarks on a journey to better manage his ADHD after being off medication for a year. The 44-year-old television personality revealed that he felt the condition taking “more of a grip” on his life, particularly after a recent family holiday where he left his wife Stacey Solomon's suitcase at home, left his iPad on a plane, and missed a flight home.

Joe's Candid Instagram Update

In a candid Instagram post on April 28, Joe admitted that stopping his medication was a mistake and expressed excitement about starting the journey again from scratch. He stated, “Now, in hindsight, I know is a bad idea so I'm sort of gonna start the journey again from scratch.” He is determined to find the right balance of medication and manage his condition “properly” this time, promising to keep his followers updated.

However, on May 7, Joe shared a more somber update on his Instagram story, revealing that he had an appointment with his doctor to discuss next steps. He wrote, “In between filming today I had an appointment with my doctor to discuss the next steps. I’ll keep you updated!”

Understanding ADHD Symptoms

ADHD affects the brain's functioning, particularly in areas related to memory, concentration, and stillness. Symptoms often begin before age 12 and can manifest differently in adults compared to children. They are grouped into two categories: inattentive and hyperactive.

Inattentive Symptoms

Inattentive symptoms include forgetfulness, easy distractibility, poor time management, difficulty following instructions, and frequently losing items like wallets or keys.

Hyperactive Symptoms

Hyperactive symptoms involve impulsivity, such as having high energy, feeling restless, being very talkative, interrupting conversations, and making quick decisions without considering consequences.

According to the NHS, most individuals experience both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms, though some may only have one set. Women are more likely to exhibit inattentive symptoms, which can be harder to recognize.

Managing ADHD

As Joe described, ADHD symptoms can significantly impact daily life, including work, studies, and relationships. However, there are several management strategies, and a specialist can help determine the best approach.

Lifestyle Changes

For some, diligent lifestyle changes can suffice, such as maintaining a routine, exercising regularly, and avoiding caffeine near bedtime.

Work and School Adjustments

Reasonable adjustments at work or school, like quiet workspaces, assistance from others, or receiving instructions in multiple formats (written and spoken), can also help.

Therapies and Medication

Talking therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy or mindfulness, may be beneficial. ADHD specialists may also prescribe medications such as methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine. The NHS notes, “You may need to try more than one medicine to find out what works for you.”

Joe's journey highlights the importance of proper management and support for those living with ADHD.
