Former Strictly Come Dancing finalist Joe Sugg has bravely opened up about his struggles with anxiety, revealing how the BBC show became a turning point in his life. The YouTube star, who shot to fame on the dancefloor alongside professional partner Dianne Buswell, admitted he used to be crippled by nerves before performing.
From Social Anxiety to the Spotlight
"I remember having really bad social anxiety," Sugg confessed. "I'd get nervous going to the shops or being in public places." The 32-year-old explained how his confidence grew through dance, particularly during his time on Strictly in 2018.
The Strictly Effect
The reality show proved transformative for Sugg: "When I did Strictly, it was the first time I'd properly danced. It gave me this new lease of life." His chemistry with Buswell was undeniable - the pair made it to the finals and later became a real-life couple.
Life After Strictly
Since leaving the competition, Sugg has continued dancing and credits it with maintaining his mental wellbeing. "It's something I genuinely love doing now," he said. "I'm not the best dancer in the world, but I enjoy it."
The influencer-turned-dancer hopes his story will inspire others facing similar challenges to find their own coping mechanisms.
