The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the full list of 46 mental health conditions that qualify claimants for up to £114.80 weekly payments of Personal Independence Payment (PIP). As of April 2026, there were 1,559,482 PIP claims for these conditions, according to the latest DWP data released last week.
PIP Claimant Numbers Rise
More than four million people were claiming PIP as of April 2026, up to 4,010,098 from 3,926,015 in January 2026, government figures show. The disability benefit helps with extra costs from long-term disability, ill-health, or terminal illness.
How PIP Works
PIP is not a flat rate but split into two components. The daily living component covers managing everyday tasks: standard rate £76.55 per week, enhanced rate £114.80. The mobility component addresses getting around: standard rate £30.20, enhanced rate £80.10. Qualifying for both enhanced rates can yield up to £187 weekly (£748 monthly).
Eligibility is not based on National Insurance contributions or means-tested. Claimants can be employed, have savings, or receive other benefits. The DWP assesses how conditions affect daily living and mobility tasks most of the time over 12 months.
