Doja Cat Discloses Borderline Personality Disorder Diagnosis
Singer Doja Cat has publicly revealed that she has been living with borderline personality disorder, describing the condition as something she has struggled with "probably forever." The artist, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, made this personal admission while defending fellow musician Chappell Roan's recent viral confrontation with paparazzi in Paris.
Mental Health Struggles and Public Persona
Doja Cat explained that she has learned from a very young age to pretend to be happy and to conceal her true feelings in order to maintain appearances in the public eye. "I've learned from a very young age to pretend that I like stuff, to pretend that I'm happy, to pretend that I don't like stuff that I do, to appear like everything is okay," Dlamini said. She added that this behavior eventually caught up with her, leading to her current struggles with borderline personality disorder.
According to the Mayo Clinic, borderline personality disorder affects how individuals feel about themselves and others, making everyday functioning challenging. Symptoms can include unstable relationships, impulsiveness, and extreme emotional swings. Doja Cat described the condition as "agonizing" and acknowledged that she has been in therapy for years, expressing relief and pride in her progress.
Admiration for Chappell Roan's Boundaries
While Doja Cat clarified that she was not suggesting Chappell Roan has BPD, she expressed admiration for how Roan asserts her boundaries and displays authenticity in public. "I love that she can be uncomfortable comfortably in front of people and protect herself," Dlamini stated. She noted that seeing Roan's honesty inspired her to be more truthful with herself after years of self-deception.
The "Paint The Town Red" singer emphasized that Roan's actions demonstrate that one can be genuine without causing harm to others. "She hasn't hurt one person by being herself, and that shows that I can do the same," Doja Cat added, highlighting the importance of self-acceptance and boundary-setting in the face of public scrutiny.
Chappell Roan's Stance on Paparazzi Harassment
Chappell Roan, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, has been vocal about the challenges of fame, particularly regarding unwanted attention. In 2024, following the success of her debut album "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess," she issued a statement rejecting any form of harassment simply because of her celebrity status.
"I chose this career path because I love music and art and honoring my inner child, I do not accept harassment of any kind because I chose this path, nor do I deserve it," Roan declared. This stance resonates with Doja Cat's own experiences, as both artists navigate the pressures of public life while advocating for mental health awareness and personal boundaries.
