Danielle Fishel Opens Up About Body Image Struggles on Boy Meets World
Danielle Fishel on Body Image Struggles During Boy Meets World

Danielle Fishel, who captured hearts as Topanga Lawrence on the beloved 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World, has opened up about the intense pressure she faced regarding her body image during her time on the show. The 44-year-old actress was just 12 years old when she was cast in 1993, and she quickly became a fan favorite, gracing magazine covers and walking red carpets. After the show ended, she pursued a career in directing and launched a podcast, but her early experiences left lasting impressions.

Pressure to Be Thin

In a recent interview with UsWeekly, Fishel shared that she was acutely aware of the pressure to maintain a slim figure, even if no one explicitly told her. “I was aware, even if nobody said it to me directly… that as far as the people in power were concerned, my body was a problem,” she said. She recalled feeling uncomfortable during the prom episode in 1998, noting that producers did not want her wearing sleeveless outfits.

Fishel, who has since battled breast cancer and adopted a more positive mindset, discussed these struggles on her rewatch podcast Pod Meets World, which she launched in 2022 with co-stars Will Friedle and Rider Strong. “Every time I have a conversation with somebody, it is a weird, comforting feeling to know there isn't something wrong with me,” she said. “That all of us who grew up around that same time [had] that same experience.”

Weight Gain and Storyline

Fishel admitted that gaining weight during the show was emotionally daunting. “I just so did not want to be there; I was uncomfortable on set every day,” she shared. “There was this feeling that I was no longer attractive, because I had gained weight. I just wanted to be anywhere other than on set. I was probably a curmudgeon.” Producers even created a storyline around her weight gain in a season seven episode titled She's Having My Baby Back Ribs, where Topanga and Eric go on a diet, leading to comedic misunderstandings.

Looking back, Fishel finds those episodes “hard to watch.” “I feel some cognitive dissonance because I'm aware that what my eyes are seeing doesn't match up with the way I feel watching,” she explained. “It just doesn’t feel good… The season seven episodes are tainted with the feeling of incredible insecurity and fear of being on camera.” She admitted that these experiences made her hesitant to pursue an on-camera career.

Self-Acceptance and New Beginnings

When asked what she would do differently if she could travel back in time, Fishel said, “I wouldn’t say or do [anything] differently other than be more accepting and loving of myself.” She noted that it has taken “a lifetime” to reach a healthier frame of mind, and that “even still, the bad habits and the bad thoughts can creep up and I have to rein it back in.”

Fishel made a rare appearance at the 51st Annual Gracie Awards in Beverly Hills on May 19, where she looked stunning in a strapless silver gown. She also competed on Dancing With the Stars in fall 2025 alongside Pasha Pashkov, a personal milestone following a challenging year of breast cancer treatment. The actress, who has two sons with producer husband Jensen Karp, has new projects in the works, including a podcast called Teen Beat that launched in January.
